I just spent ONE TENTH of my paycheck at the pharmacy for my insulin & 2 other Rxs. That's with state insurance. And a savings card. And only 1 of my 2 insulins.
Never did I imagine, at 36 years of having Type 1 diabetes, that this *gestures to healthcare system* would be the best we can do.

A small, light blue crocheted octopus rests against a coffee cup.
The shadow for one of my students surprised me with this adorable crocheted octopus because "You love marine biology so much!" 🥹😍

Yesterday, I expressed to my team how I am absolutely not fond of "lunch and learns" they keep wanting to schedule.
Even when lunch is provided, it's still another hour of work. I use lunch to refocus and relax.
And free lunch is great and all but so is not working an extra hour.
Started the coffee pot and walked away to continue the morning routine. Minutes later, overflowing, boiling hot coffee *everywhere*...because I forgot to rinse the carafe out last night. New coffee on top of old coffee.
Round 2: successful brewing!
🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️

Top down view of a Bullina bubble snail exploring algal turf on a shallow rocky reef. Two tiny black dots for eye-spots behind its headshield. Neon blue edge, a pale blue body, cherry-red stripes on a tiny white shell. What's not to love. Lower half of the image is swatches of the Bullina's colours.
Last of the palettes included in the R package, but certainly not least, the beautiful Bullina bubble-baby. Tiny, friend-shaped, perfect.

Today's quote from one of my freshman nuggets:
Them: But I listen when I'm sleeping!
Me: ...wow, okay, so then you totally know the directions and don't need me to repeat them?? 😂🤣🤦🏻♀️
(His tablemates were dying laughing at him for this too)

Three cool scientists introduce their work "Our new theory has been submitted to a peer-reviewed journal, but we feel its depths and intricacies are best appreciated on the limited-edition vinyl release."
My latest cartoon for @newscientist.com

Driving to work this morning, and a barred owl was chilling atop a speed limit sign. This was a back highway, heavily forested.
The image will stay with me forever: just past dawn, 39"(F), large bird of prey majestically perched on a manmade tool. The contrasting colors striking.

Two hooded figures with lamps approach a moonlit, isolated cottage. A woman answers the door. We have come for the child, says the hooded figure So soon? she asks It is time, says the hooded figure. The woman is distraught. We should never have got him a library card! What is done cannot be undone, says the hooded figure We couldn’t see the harm! We just wanted him to enjoy reading! For most, it ends there, says the hooded figure, turning away and walking into the wilderness Oh lord, What have I done! says the woman, the child walks past her and out into the darkness with them. Do not cry mother. I am a writer now.

A black and white photo of Einstein’s desk, blackboard, and bookshelves after he passed away. Journals, magazine, and papers are strewn over the desk and shelves. A few of the shelves are organized, but mostly they contain haphazard, listing stacks that seem like they could fall over at any moment. The desk is a beautiful disaster, with papers and journals covering every inch. A pot for tobacco, a small glass jar, and Einstein’s pipe sit near the middle. The dark leather chair is pushed back slightly from the desk. The blackboard is sectioned off into several different regions, each of which contains one or more boxed formulas from whatever Einstein was working on when he fell ill.
Albert Einstein passed away #OTD in 1955 due to complications from a ruptured abdominal aneurysm.
Doctors recommended surgical intervention but Einstein declined, saying “I have done my share; it is time to go. I will do it elegantly."
Here is his office as he left it. 🧪 ⚛️

Mitochondria pasta 😆
The exhaustion of having to explain, justify, or defend, your area of interest(s), even the fact that you *possess* an interest or awareness outside of your job, i.e. absorbing science articles in your free time when you teach English...is infuriating.

A beautiful large sea hare, close-up as it emerges over a rocky, algae-covered shelf into brighter sunlight. Brilliantly camouflaged, it blends in well with the reef. The lower half of the image contains swatches of its colour palette.
I love these beautiful derps. Sydney sea hares (Aplysia) tend to be brilliantly camouflaged, matching their temperate rocky reef habitat. One of the more subtle palettes in the R colour package.

Happy 8th anniversary to the tweet that changed us forever. Look at this absolute unit.
Exactly! That pattern recognition and subsequent restructuring and formation of paradigms is so much fun to witness or attempt to facilitate as an educator.
This is why we need science, and art, and writing, and math, and engineering, and technical design, and every single discipline in education, all working together to coalesce into something amazing and lovely.
