34 Small Coppers in less than ideal weather this morning .Walked right around the outside of the power station .....a first for me ! bloomin' windy ! interested to know what this enclosure is protecting, including a small "inner" cage ,wonder if you,ve any idea ?
Nipped in to see Dave as well.
Sounds good !.........at least the Orchiding does !π
Thanks Ian ,yes as you say they are confusing .I thought the fact that it was "surveying" the st.johnswort ,to which it returned several times could have been significant as the two species use that particular plant I believe.
Found a colourful small Sawfly today locally (mid-Kent) it was resting and wandering around a Hypericum (sp) .....i,ve whittled it down to two Tenthredo species .T.amoena or T.Distinguenda .I favour the latter @ianbeavis.bsky.social
With you on that one Steve............Come on you Whites !!........please π
Stunning !...........i, settle for just one !π
Around the trapping area at #Dungeness was a stunning male Black Redstart and at least 3 Wheatear, +singing Willow Warbler and Lesser Whitethroat, numerous Whitethroats and calling Cetti,s. On the reserve a few Swallows and House Martins ,many Reed +Sedge Warblers ,best a Little Ringed Plover.
Small Coppers were out and about in the trapping area at Dungeness this morning ,23 in all and a few Peacock and Green-veined Whites .Later on the RSPB reserve another 3 Small Coppers .
Thanks !........π
Thanks Ian ......please to have seen them !
Seen similar along the Stour at Conningbrook Ashford .
When the sun shone for a few minutes at #conningbrook a couple of female Green-veined Whites got busy .....egg laying on the numerous Cuckoo flowers .....if you look carefully you may just see an egg on the stalk of the top drooping flower (r/h)
Blimey !......better keep its head down !
At #Conningbrook lakes today ,weather mostly dull but warm .Very few Ducks about mainly Mallard and a trio of Tufteds .Ist singing Reed Warbler and 2 Whitethroats +Blackcap,Chiffchaff and Cetti's .2 Swallows .1 Sand Martin ,4 Lapwing .Best a Cuckoo ,seen and heard .Also Egyptian Geese + 7 Goslings,
Thankyou !
Good to see a few small bees around just lately, still getting to grips with their ID's .I think the bee on the leaf is a female Long horned Bee (E.Longicornis),the grounded individual,a Tawny Mining Bee (Andrena Fulva) and around the "bee box" a Red mason Bee (Osmia Bicornis) @ianbeavis.bsky.social
πExcellent ! good job with the Small Torts !.......very thin on the ground thus far, still only seen the one (and 19 Large Torts ) not seen a Red Ad yet either ......but did find two Clouded Yellows at Samphire Hoe a few days back.
Any Small Coppers ?
Great stuff ! thanks for the info ,I,ll take a look ......looks very interesting .
Just out of interest ......what do you make of this Sawfly ? the closest I can find is Aquilegia Sawfly it was resting on a Camellia ,but Aquilegia plants grew close by.
Thanks for that ,in the book that I use they call it Zaraea Fasciata ......Honeysuckle Sawfly.......only seen the one !
Heres the one I found ,are the sexes very different ? maybe this is a female ?
The only Honeysuckle Sawfly that i,ve seen (and photographed) was more Black and White in appearance ,i,ll dig out the pic ......lovely insect none the less .
Looks a good trip Jon !............2 Clouded Yellows and a few Early Spiders along the beach sect; Samphire Hoe .......don,t think its going to be a classic year there though !
Very nice ! but to my eye it looks more like Dusky horned Scabious Sawfly (Abia Candens )
Herb Paris.
Lady Orchid in bud.
Toothwort (a parasitic plant )
Coralroot from set-aside scrub at Pashley Gardens (East Sussex)
More bits and pieces from earlier . Around the tree bases still a few Toothwort to be found and a dozen or so Herb Paris showing on a downland slope .Fewer Lady Orchids as yet ,with several that appear blind. Finally from Pashley gardens ,E.Sussex ,Coralroot ,this one in a bit of set aside scrub.
A wet walk up on the downs and woodlands near Crundale earlier.....started out a butterfly /bug walk and ended admiring the Blue bells ! among the thousands on show and not particularly "rare" were one or two White individuals and close by an attractive "inbetweenie " all very enjoyable ...but wet !
Nice one Owen ! found an absolute " ghost" Large Tort earlier at Nicks place ( no 19 ) 3rd of season at that site.........any Small Coppers yet ?
Came across this small moth recently at Lydden Spout near Dover .I think that it could be Eriopsela Quadrata the Four Spot Belle ,which I believe is a Goldenrod feeder......Happy to be corrected ! #teammoth #mothsmatter #ukmoths
