As teachers in Scotland head towards the summer break, some thoughts on ‘what to do’. Whilst it’s tempting to plan to do lots of school tasks, it’s vital you relax. If you HAVE to work, put specific dates in the calendar and stick to them, that way you can enjoy the rest of the holiday guilt-free.
www.het.org.uk/lessons-from... A fabulous opportunity to learn from the best. All teachers, not just those from the Humanities, should attend an HET workshop. #NewTeachers #StudentTeachers

Yesterday I contacted the #mentors I work with to suggest some blogs I have written in response to the mentor queries I have received at this time of year. If you work with #ITT beginning teachers in #PGCE #SCITT #TeacherEducation these may be of use.

Student teachers: don’t forget to make the most of whole-school experiences whilst you’re on placement. Staff meetings, in-service days, inter-disciplinary projects etc. are all great opportunities to build positive relationships across the school.
What a delight for student teachers to come back @ioe.bsky.social & showcase their teaching around #active #citizenship & also learn & co-construct teaching materials with the @g-epicproject.bsky.social research team. Our student teachers are almost qualified teachers! They are beginning teachers!
Sunday Scaries? You can’t plan for every eventuality. In my classroom there are 28 variables just with the people. That’s before we factor in weather and insects.
Don’t overthink it. Go with what’s probable not possible. You’ve got this 😊
Have you listened to our weekly podcast yet? Our most popular podcast episode is a practical guide to Assessment in CfW - making it work, followed up by #2, All About Cognitive Load - with lots of examples.

Throughout my career I’ve always dipped-in to @suecowley.bsky.social ‘s excellent books. Her modelled scenarios are always realistic and simple to apply. I highly recommend this webinar.
Reading should be a pleasure in each subject. So build it in, don't bolt it on. Let the scholarship used to design the lessons ooze through, in its cadences, rhythms & latent questions. And climb in thro well-crafted text: don't introduce knowledge as tidy, generalised facts.
Publication in June...
Really enjoyed @fredoxby.bsky.social ‘s article in @histassoc.bsky.social TH198. Drawing on work from across HA, @1972shp.bsky.social and wider to make the case that local history is pivotal both in making history meaningful and in the process of decolonising #historyteacher

I wrote this blog-post shortly after retiring and tried to include useful thoughts for new teachers - maybe also not so new. Anyhow, here it is, and @newtscotland.bsky.social might enjoy it. (Mainly about teaching history)

As you approach the end of your spring placements, take the chance to have some fun (and take some risks) with your classes. With the support of your department, experiment with activities, tasks and resources. Find a way to get out of the classroom and explore yours and their boundaries.
