Photo of a square shaped clay tablet with 5 lines cuneiform text followed by a ruling (a line). In the blank space below the line, the student has drawn a seated figure with an outstretched arm and possibly the start of another figure behind that one.
In my book, Between Two Rivers, I take you through what it was like to go to school in ancient Babylonia.
Discarded clay tablets from schools preserve the many stages of education and also just…kids being kids. Like one who did this little doodle of (maybe) the teacher
“If International Women’s Day is to be more than a symbolic gesture, it must be grounded in an ethic of radical solidarity – one that refuses to separate gender from race, class and colonial violence.” www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2025...
Yes! Caz and I will be on in a couple of weeks, too 🫠
It’s happening this week!!
We have a new post up on the Shiloh Project! Some really interesting and important resonances between text and contemporary context… shilohproject.blog/what-has-the...
Photo of a detail from a stone relieve that shows large feathers with incredible detail, lots of lines to show individual parts of the feathers, overlaid with cuneiform text
Detail of cuneiform chiselled onto the wing of a protective spirit from an ancient Assyrian palace in Nimrud.
Just stunning.

So thrilled you discovered the podcast! 🙈 the accent
This is my favorite picture of Stonewall.
They knew they were getting arrested just for being LGBTQ+.
Yet... they're still here, standing outside of the boarded up Stonewall Inn, smiling as the world was at a fever pitch of hatred against them.
I think about it a lot in moments like this.
This was actually one of the final episodes that Caz and I recorded but it seems apt to post it now… sigh 😔 @doctorlamplight.bsky.social
This is going to be exceptional
I think this is still our most downloaded episode of @bloodybiblepodcast.bsky.social to date… Check it out if you had a listen already!

I've been ruminating on this since that pic of the PM packing food parcels
there are major issues with charity as a response to food hardship:

Here’s a BB episode on the Bible and sexual violence against men in the stories of Lot and Jesus. Reflecting on recent cases of male sexual assault, we discuss how these biblical texts echo harmful myths and misperceptions that surround this crime today www.bloodybiblepodcast.com/episodes/blo...
Check this out! This project to acClimatise the lectionary is lead by the utterly exceptional Jione Havea and is (I think) going to be a real game changer… very, very exciting. Get in on this mahi (if it’s your thing)!

i hope the courage it took for tariana turia to vote against the foreshore and seabed bill is never lost to history. it remains the most principled political act of 21st century new zealand politics. and she caught hell for it from her former party of the time
The overwhelm is real and it's deliberate. You don't have to be an expert, or write a treatise on why it's bad. They know it's bad!
"I am writing to register my opposition to X Bill. I do not believe it aligns with the values we aspire to. I urge you to scrap it as recommended by numerous experts"
I have posted my submission on the Treaty Principles Bill here. Submissions close at midnight on 7 January and I have included a link to where you can make your own in the post.

Here’s an episode of @bloodybiblepodcast.bsky.social where Caz and I talk about Dinah and Tamar and contemporary myths and misperceptions about rape that continue to shape our thinking about sexual violence today
I miss Rod a lot. This is such a great way to honour him and his work ❤️

I’ve been thinking a lot recently about women who don’t perform gender roles ‘properly.’ There are lots of women who don’t conform to gender stereotypes and one of them is Judith whose bloody murder of Holofernes marked her out as both a lethal woman and a biblical hero. I loved making this episode!
In this @bloodybiblepodcast episode on dangerous men in the book of Esther, we give a big shoutout to the amazing womanist biblical scholar, Dr Ericka Dunbar. You can read some of Ericka's work on sex trafficking in Esther here

In this Bloody Bible episode, we explore the mesmerising, dangerous, and truly intriguing figure of the femme fatale, focusing on the quintessential biblical femme fatale, Delilah. It’s a good one!
