Built in 1901 by 'Matchless' Frank Matcham, a power house for the arts, the Hackney Empire is superb. Famously brilliant pantomime every year, saw English Touring Opera's fab G&S 'The Gondoliers'on Saturday gone.

Seventeenth century paper cuttings discovered under the floorboards at the house, which housed more than one girls' school. Images of two birds, a dog, a woman and a girl with a man, as well as an origami star.

I used to work at Sutton House in Hackney and I wish I'd known in time that these C17th paper cuttings had been found and displayed - one of them has my surname on it! Included in a great summary of the house's unique history in today's Look Up London blog: lookuplondon.substack.com/p/inside-hac...

1884 Looking north to Old Tower from Graham Road. Alfred Braddock must have got up early to get this view ,which includes the rebuilt King's Head on the right hand side and dates from about 1884 Eley and Wilmer the drapers was to house Henry Mason's cinematographic exhibition in 1909, One of the earliest cinemas in Hackney, No 333, part of the gabled building, was the Hackney Picture Palace in ?....though both this and the former Green and Branscombes shop before the bridge were given over to the Hackney Furnishing Company. No 329 was later demolished to widen Graham Road.
