Our very own Dr Nemi Walding’s findings on volcanic lithofacies on the Tonga Trench slope now feature in the latest edition of the Journal of Volcanology and Geothermal Research! www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

So they’re “rare” exposures, but we need to see more of the seafloor!
I think there is likely to be “glimpses” of deposits across the Forearc region - but the challenge is getting there and finding the best way to systematically record descriptions/images of these deposits
I looked into past Tonga Forearc expeditions - there are lots of dredges, but limited visual outcrops. In Mariana there are more images/videos but not much work has been done to visually characterise the rocks (especially at this depth)
Of all the dives we did - this was the clearest exposure…
And a massive thank you to my awesome co-authors who have helped to develop this work 🌋 🌊
My first step into the underwater world! This project is my first output from my ongoing work with @kelpiegeo.bsky.social
A very cool project - imagine your favourite PDC and pumice fall deposits but at 5080 metres below sea level (15 Eiffel towers!!)
How did it get there? Find out below… ⬇️ 🌋
The news about students seeking compensation from universities for COVID teaching has made me quite sad.
I can't say what happened at those universities, or what those student's experience was. My present university did not appear to be in the list.
But what I can say is...

Very grateful, very happy. I’m a Dr! 🌋
Had the pleasure of presenting at GiG 2025 today! What a lovely little full circle moment - heading back to my undergraduate university to give a talk.
Thanks for organising @girlsingeosci.bsky.social and well done to all the other women who did awesome talks and workshops!
Very inspiring stuff🌋

What happens when a dense, aerated granular flow encounters a vertical barrier? What night these mean for the behaviours of pyroclastic density currents? Check out Jordan Chenery's poster at #IAVCEI2025

We tried compiling a global database of deposit descriptions of pyroclastic density current deposits. The aim was to help us do big data analysis, look for common trends, and to support modelling.
We got some interesting results but also, found some really significant issues and gaps #IAVCEI2025

At #IAVCEI2025 it's the best session of the week. 3.9 Multidisciplinary Advances in Understanding Pyroclastic Density Currents. Convened by @pdcguy.bsky.social, Sylvain Charbonnier, @nemiwalding.bsky.social (online) and me!
Come to room 380, enjoy the air conditioning and awesome PDC science.
A really great end to this lahars focussed mini session at @iavcei.bsky.social by @mikeaclare.bsky.social from @noc.ac.uk presenting work on lahars offshore and their huge sediment loads funded by the Sustainable Blue Economies Program.
Playing around with a close-up B&W edit of the best footage I have ever captured on this Earth. Hoping compression doesn't prevent y'all from seeing the incredible rain of debris.

Dr. Nemi Walding @nemiwalding.bsky.social is a post-doctoral research fellow at Kelpie Geoscience Ltd in Edinburgh. Her research integrates high-resolution topographic models with photography and video analysis to investigate submarine volcano geomorphology… (1/3)
Look at her! ❤️🌋
I had the pleasure of presenting at BGS Edinburgh today! I spoke about my PhD work as well as the postdoc work I’ve been doing. Thank you to those that attended and the invitation to present 🌋
NEW PAPER! 🌋
In this manuscript we have compared a range of natural and analogue materials, in wet and dry environments, to inform material used in analogue modelling. Particularly we explore the use of material for pyroclastic density current modelling.

I had the pleasure of attending the GeoHab 2025 conference in Key West.
It was an amazing conference to be introduced into the wonderful diversity and science of geology/biology/habitat interactions.
Thanks to the amazing organisers and presenters who made it epic!
Delighted that this paper has hit p[ublication. Nemi did a truly amazing job on all of this, and together with 3 other papers (1 published 2023, the others winging their way to print soon) has really moved forward our understanding of moisture in pyroclastic sediments.
