Real-time PCR for real-time AMS!
Mo Yin with David Paterson briefing the #AMR2026 audience on their tremendous work across all of Asia to improve outcomes for patients with MDR infections (28d mortality 27-42%).
Implementation science for the adoption of BioFire to drive treatment decisions in 2-3 hours instead of 2-5 days.
Day 2 at #AMR2026: most/all prescribing should be directed by diagnostic test results, and my colleague Bruce Altevogt pointed out that many AMS guidelines don’t mention diagnostics at all.
He also notes that “AMS is Health Security” - at a population and societal level.
Kicking off the #AMR2026 Jane Halton just gave the war cry to fight cookers in the social media trenches. Don’t let the inaccurate voices amplify. TO WAR!!
This week in Australia: we won two Winter Olympics Gold medals ⛷️🥇 🏂 🥇; we lost a game of cricket 🏏 against Zimbabwe, and the central player in 💧Watergate💧 (an $80M fraud 💰 against the federal govt) was elected as the leader of the Liberal party.
Say it again, Maggie…

I know who needs to see this... It's the vast majority of presenters that I have seen recently start their PPT show with Presenter View the wrong way around.
This is all you need to do to swap screens - & not lose me in the first 10 seconds of your talk...

This week’s highlights:
1. Paed ED said “my phone is full of photos of poo”.
2. Sent an ID Prof a Caddyshack DVD.
#POC25 Cheryl Johnson (Ngati Porou Oranga, NZ) on Indigenous Community-led Point of Care Testing: Cervical screening (pap smears) was not well adopted by Māori women who didn't like speculums. So self-collected swabs for HPV POCT is called "The Selfie" - brilliant! Increased screening is good.
#POC25: "Learn, unlearn and relearn" is Nikki Pant Pai's catch cry. We need to unlearn that molecular testing can only be done in laboratories.
Very well done!
(TGA-registered POC molecular test now available!👋)

Yep! Phages, new drugs, mAbs, etc - Regulators (and funders) need to get pragmatic.
That's an important but slippery slope. How much blame can we apportion to the regulators for the AMR hole we find ourselves in? It's step 1 on the game board - and modern medical industry can't open the old/outdated locks.

#ASID2025 session on Aus CDC moving from Interim to Full 😁; while we hear about USA CDC decimation at the hands of Trump and DOGE 😱🤡
Ushma Wadia (PCH): RSV vaccine rollout in WA slashes admissions, saves a ton of money (and parent stress) and safety looks good through monitoring systems.
Pat Harris letting us down gently with the early tarnish on some of the lauded new anti-Gram neg agents at #ASID2025 (is that a tag?).
There’s a goodish one, for $7k per day (hospital administrators, time to clutch your pearls)
Giske: beware using Cefiderocol discs in MBL strains - many isolates are S by MIC but in ATU (uncertain) on disc, resulting in over-calling of resistance.

She also notes, we don’t need more "lab in a box" PCR systems; we need 3-5-10 yr funding models to keep them online AND serviced in conflict zones (tricky)
