Easily one of my favourite outreach activities. Engaging students and meeting other STEM professionals in short bursts in slots that you can work into your schedule fairly easily. Totally encourage anyone to apply!

This is fantastic to see! Looking forward to digesting this preprint (and the final form of the article as and when), congratulations @ccilelorrain.bsky.social and @iglavincheska.bsky.social ! ๐ฅณ #ZymoPreprint #FungalGenetics
Swiss Alps seen from Neuchatel
Excited to do a postdoc in beautiful Neuchatel / Switzerland๐จ๐ญ?
We have several postdoc positions open at the moment!

Happy to answer any question and please spread the word to anyone who might be interested!
Sun setting behind trees. Foreground daffodils and rolling grass hills.
Plenty of fantastic sunrises and sunsets lately. Photo doesn't quite capture the magic of daffodils dancing in the gentle breeze between setting sunbeams.
Hey friends,
What's a reliable workhorse RT PCR machine you'd recommend? I'm asking for a researcher in Nigeria that won't be able to source it on the US used market. Any models to look out for or Ali Baba alternatives? I don't have much experience with those. TYIA! Please RT. ๐

Image of person at a microscope with text explaining the BSPP Undergraduate Vacation Bursary. Projects run 6-8 weeks in the summer, students receive ยฃ450 per week. Students do not have to be BSPP members.
The @bspp.bsky.social Undergraduate Vacation Bursary Scheme applications are open๐
Delighted to see the fantastic projects on offer! (I'm a little more biased than usual this year ๐)

Sequencing the genomes of >100 liverworts has uncovered ancient plant adaptation mechanisms, with researchers pinpointing genes linked to temperature and rainfall changes.

Proud to say my PhD work has been published in PLOS pathogens and is accompanied with a short press release! Please have a read if you are interested in the use of transcriptomics for the control of fungal diseases ๐พ๐โ๐ซ๐ฉโ๐ป๐ฉโ๐ฌ www.rothamsted.ac.uk/news/killer-...
Agree. It is also totally bizarre at the moment I am in a unit that is meant to teach about discussing the news and one of the phrases is about either poor Owen or Dylan getting killed by one! (I normally screenshot the parsnips translations as it is a saga but I must have been tired)
The Welsh Duolingo has a thing for parsnips (pannas).
Very interesting new paper on pop genomics of the wheat pathogen Zymoseptoria tritici by the @rstam.bsky.social lab in Kiel! Great to see this field growing!

Massive back catalogue (I think I started listening whilst i was writing my thesis ๐) about some truly terrible folks from history to modern day.
Was hooked to the show/host dynamic after listening to "The Russian Scientist Who Helped Kill 30 Million People" episode 31. Does have ads.
Image shows the top five podcasts listened to by Hannah. 1. Behind the Bastards, 2. Oh God, What Now? 3. Off Menu, 4. Always Be Comedy and 5. Ologies
In case my lab/office mates wonder what I'm listening to on my ridiculous headphones. #podcasts
Am impressed (and delighted) that @alwaysbecomedy.bsky.social made it as a recent-ish addition to the rotation ๐
Last days to apply for www.exeter.ac.uk/study/fundin... #PhD The enemy of my enemy. Answers to "why does Zymoseptoria infect wheat but not wheat's worst weed blackgrass?" BBSRC #SWBioDTP studentship for 2025. Closing midnight 11th December 2024. @rothamsted.bsky.social @quietscientist.bsky.social
Close up on face of green dragonfly (think it is a female Hawker) sitting in the grass on edge of a small wildlife pond. She returns to the same spot repeatedly making photographing easy!
An empty dragonfly nymph larva case loosely clinging to a green reed amongst the reed bed. The case has completely dried a mix of brown shades, and the exit point on the back where the dragonfly will have emerged.
Been a while since I posted some of my photography. Dragonflies are my favourite annual challenge, and the small wildlife pond lets me get very close. #naturephotography #wildlife #dragonfly

There was a phase in thesis/paper writing that my catchphrase/the only thing people heard me say was "ggplot hates me" followed by "this worked before I don't understand why changing [insert aesthetic change or daring to try to add significance codes] breaks that".
