A herculean effort by many, but esp. the first three authors: Ujjwal Rathore, Eli Dugan, and Hunter Thornton working in the Krogan and Marson labs, with a veritable army of collaborators from HARC (harc.ucsf.edu) and beyond.

As I am nearing finishing grad school (hopefully π€π½) I am more and more realizing how grad school is not a sprint and rather is a marathon. Somehow I was hoping it'd be a sprint near the end - but that's definitely not the case π³

Excited to share a new review by @kocherlab.bsky.social and me:
Nature-inspired neuroscience
We discuss diverse sensory systems and behaviors across the animal kingdom and argue for their integration into neuroscience. New tools in diverse systems are making this possible β¨

Great news from the lab - weβve been awarded a MIRA (R35)!
This grant provides 5-year support for our research program. We are very grateful to NIGMS/ #NIH for supporting our research. We will be hiring a research technician and a postdoc.

βThe overall message is that internal conflict is a central, not peripheral, feature of organismal biology, and should be considered in studies of development, evolution, cancer and beyond.β

Twenty years ago, thanks to the CNRSβ ATIP programme (www.insb.cnrs.fr/fr/atip-avenir), I had the opportunity to embark on this wonderful human and scientific adventure. Thank you to all my colleagues and to the funding agencies for making this possible.
My first mentee presented her first poster today - yayy ! Minseo Kim is a phenomenal masters student in our lab & has been working with me for her thesis. She'll soon be applying for MD-PhD programs & will definitely be someone to watch ! #phdlife

I'm excited to tell you about the most recent preprint in my lab, demonstrating that a conserved spindle matrix protein, NPP-21/TPR, is required for the stronger checkpoint in germline cells during embryogenesis in C. elegans
Can I just say - my masters trainee is giving her first poster presentation tomorrow. I am so excited as her mentor. She has been working with me for a while and I am so proud of all the stuff she has accomplished π₯Ήπ₯³
Yayyyy π₯

Senior professors - if you want to help your junior colleagues in these times, I am begging you, review our papers. I have done 25 manuscript reviews in the last 6 years. But my own manuscript is stalled out waiting for reviewers. Relatedly, I won't be doing any more reviews until tenure. π§ͺ

Thomas MΓΌller-Reichert showed that in C. elegans embryos, spindle length scales with cell size, but chromosome segregation dynamics remain constant. In RPE1 cells, 11-12 microtubules are attached end-on to each kinetochore, and monopolar spindles have a twist. #SpindleCroatia2026

I am totally on board with that, and I find it so liberating π
A very fun read, with some timely reminders. I suppose itβs to the advantage of research that there really arenβt many (any?) career paths left that offer much in the way of stability and reasonable gratification. Levels the playing field a bit that itβs our *generations* being thrown to the wolves.
It's a beautiful read π₯Ή

Lineage tracing of NPCs in developing kidney reveals Rac1 required for NPCs formation. (A) Frozen section of Six2Cre;R26RtdT and Rac1fl/fl;Six2Cre;R26RtdT at E16.5 counterstained with DAPI. TdTomato expression labels all Six2+NPC derivatives. Blank arrowheads point to NPCs in cap mesenchyme. Green arrowheads point to SSB. Yellow arrowheads point to glomeruli. Scale bar, 100um.

Rac1 is essential for kidney development, by controlling proliferation and self-renewal in nephron progenitor cells.
