Have you seen the size of Infante’s nest?! 😮
#WhiteStorks add new nest material every year, and nests can become HUGE! Comparing Infante’s nest with the one on the left (which fell in 2025 and is still being rebuilt) really puts it into perspective.

Two white stork hatchlings, two intact eggs and one broken egg and egg shells, on a white stork's nest.
Our first chicks have hatched! 🐣
Last week we welcomed the first hatchlings of the season. We’re looking forward to following their growth and seeing them fledge in a couple of months!

Os francelhos (Falco naumanni) já regressaram das longas migrações desde África e começam a instalar‑se nas planícies da Zona de Proteção Especial de Castro Verde.
The 2026 fieldseason is underway! Excited to be back out in the field and discovering some new birds breeding.
New team member in the field! 🐦
This week we're welcoming PhD candidate @anna-thompson.bsky.social to the field! Anna is now monitoring #WhiteStork nests, collecting data for her PhD on individual determinants of variability in migratory behaviour.

What a patriotic stork!
#WhiteStorks are known to bring human-made items to their nests (often with negative consequences – see our paper: tinyurl.com/58rupn7t).
But this one brought a Portuguese flag! These chicks will get their first geography lesson as soon as they hatch!

Here we go again! 😍
Our team is back on the field to monitor our #WhiteStork colonies! Despite the heavy rains in Portugal, our storks have been busy re-building the nests and some already have near full clutches!

📢📢PhD opportunity!
We are looking for enthusiastic researchers to develop a project looking at the ontogeny of migratory behaviour!

BirdDRice: Reconciling agriculture with biodiversity conservation: functional equivalence and connectivity between natural wetlands and rice fields as waterbird habitats
Extremelly happy that our project BirdRice was approved for funding! We will keep studying the relationships between #waterbirds and #ricefields while trying to solve human-wildlife conflicts.

While monitoring storks over the years, we’ve noticed the alarming numbers of chicks entangled in ropes. In this paper, we quantified the impacts!

Spring has arrived, and so have the first rollers!
Our team is working hard to provide them with the best nesting sites. Follow our journey!

The breeding season is moving along nicely, and most #WhiteStork eggs have already hatched!
Here is 5Y+, a 9-year-old male ringed as a chick in 2016, with his three hatchlings and two remaining eggs.

Storks are amazing birds. Tracking them for many years enabled us to find some cool stuff!
So happy to share our paper on how #WhiteStorks are changing their migratory behaviour. Check it here:

The Ecology & Behaviour annual conference is organised BY and FOR young researchers. In 2025 it comes back to Montpellier @ the Center for Functional & Evolutionary Ecology.
Highly recommended to PhD students & postdocs - come to share your science, make new friends & meet your future collaborators!
We've been following #Barlavento for many years now. This winter, his GPS device stopped working in Senegal and we were unsure about his fate. It was a relief to find him well this week, ready to start another breeding season! Well done Barlavento!
We are working to revert the decline of the European Roller (Coracias garrulus) in Portugal, with 156 nest-boxes ready for the upcoming breeding season!
How many will be occupied this year? Stay tuned!
