With no cover, either due to grazing to the ground or grass cut, it’s not surprising predation is the “cause of breeding failure” but is it actually the root cause?

This field had displaying Curlew in yesterday. Today, the first run by the farmer with machinery of some sort. No doubt there will be at least one cut before fledging time. Yet all the reports seem to say the problem is “predation”. Has anyone looked at silage v meadow curlew breeding success?

The most unsettling sign I’ve come across in Asia. I did not like the prospect of being hit from a great height with a heavy, spiky and extremely potent smelling culturally iconic fruit

A final and beautifully written reminder that you can still sponsor my team’s bird racing efforts and support putting Swift boxes on Fire Station towers (cool idea, and it works) by donating here: gofund.me/81fedb827

On this years Yorkshire Bird Race we managed 84 species in icy conditions. That’s our second best tally in 5 attempts at Swilly Ings, despite misses including Barnie, Glossy Ibis, Peregrine and Feral Pigeon 😑. If you fancy sponsoring us in aid of Leeds Swifts, go here: gofund.me/81fedb827

Nowhere in the hysterical pile-on against the BBC in the British press has anyone mentioned that BBC News now has 77 million viewers & listeners in the US and has established itself as the second most trusted news source there.

Tomorrow I’m giving my “Peregrines cause some right issues when fledging” presentation for Richmondshire and Hambleton RSPB. Hadn’t noticed this little gem before in my video archive. No, it’s not an outtake from Aliens, it’s a rescued Peregrine taking a swat at my mate Les #reactionspeed

1/6 The Year of the Chiffchaff - escape from this gloomy rainy day to the promise of spring.
The Chiffchaff builds its nest with an outer shell of grass, with leaves at it's base.
It's a wonderful dome-shaped structure which is extremely well hidden, often by the side of a path.

A mandatory swift brick for every new home won't be supported by Housing Secretary Steve Reed. That's quite a u-turn from the former Environment Secretary. www.theguardian.com/environment/...
