Forest Service Cuts Would Devastate Years Of Hawaiʻi Research, Experts Warn The Forest Service is looking to close its Big Island labs — the only ones of their kind, researchers say, that help protect the Pacific's unique tropical forests.

The Forest Service’s proposed closure of research facilities in Hawaiʻi, including the Institute of Pacific Islands Forestry and a biocontrol lab, threatens years of research on biocontrol agents and disease-resistant ʻōhiʻa strains, impacting efforts to protect Hawaiʻi’s forests and watersheds.

Identification of hot spring Obelisk-like RNA replicons and expanded diversity of the Obelisk superfamily - Nature Communications In this study, the authors identify circular RNAs replicating in high-temperature hot spring environments and demonstrate that ccc RNA replicons belonging to the Obelisk superfamily are more diverse and widespread than previously recognized, revealing hidden RNA systems in natural environments.

mRNA vaccines continue to show major promise.

In a small Phase 1 trial led by Dr. Balachandran, some patients with pancreatic cancer (one of the deadliest cancers) reached 6-year survival.

This is why sustained investment in science & research matters.

We Need to Prepare for the Mammoth Task of De-Trumpification The damage he and his cronies have wrought could take decades to repair, particularly when it comes to science and public health.

The task of de-Trumpification of science and public health will take a generation and a "Marshall Plan" to rebuild. Without a bold, expansive vision to guide us, there is no coming back. Small-bore, poll-tested versions of the future will not help us. www.thenation.com/article/soci...

A very nice 🧵 on a rather surprising finding.

New mRNA vaccine research has basically been shelved by this administration.

We know that vaccines basically eliminate cervical cancers.

The prospect of expanding this to additional cancers is incredible. Particularly the most lethal ones like pancreatic.

There needs to be a giant billboard in every major American city that touts this. In any other era except this suicidal science administration, this would be a miraculous, wondrous thing.

I'm not joking when I say mRNA technology is more important than "AI" and it's a tragedy we're throwing billions into one while our government is aggressively defunding the other.

Fun bit of trivia: the first photo of DNA's structure was from cow DNA.

Specifically, it's from 'calf thymus tissue', chosen because harvesting DNA from this tissue yields long continuous strands ("high MW DNA", in the parlance).

You're looking at what makes a cow a cow in this famous photograph.

So, thing that is apparently better understood inside academia than outside of it:

International students pay sticker price. Most domestic students do not. International students are subsidizing the education costs for domestic students, as per student governmental funding drops.

Trump Slashed Science Funding. Now the U.S. Could Face a Costly Brain Drain.

This isn’t a “could face” situation.

It’s a “are facing” situation. And brain drain will continue to happen as long as we undermine science in the US.
