An exciting competitive game yesterday at Gloucestershire cricket ground vs Lancashire #cricket #gloucestershire #lancashire. Must remember to take some binoculars next time, the action really is so-o-o-o far away.

Marazon, by Nevil Shute. Written in 1926 it's now 100 years old. It was his first published novel, written (he notes in the authors note in my 1965 reprint) when he was helping design the R100 airship. He says he rewrote it three times in its entirety over 18 months and sold 1200 copies at the time.

By failing to understand the nuances of the vetting process and how it is used, @theguardian.com has largely created this problem for Starmer. I hope you're happy with that, you lot.

Here's a flowering Hamamelis in Bath botanic garden this past weekend. Rather fine, yet nicely unusual.

Of course you should get a cat. Nothing tough about that decision, if it is even a decision - foregone conclusion more likely.

Could you do a review of kettles to find the ones that boil the quietest? Many are so noisy when you're trying to have a conversation, especially with anyone who's got hearing issues.

Oh dear, the page does look odd. Wonder if you change 'Support Plant Sciences' to 'Support Us' that might bring the top bar back to one row?

The Journal of Asian Studies and AI - Association for Asian Studies By Joseph S. Alter It is difficult to exaggerate the impact of AI on academia in general and on scholarly publishing in particular. Tools such as ChatGPT and Claude have made it possible for anyone to turn free-floating information into what looks like knowledge using a combination of real and artificial intelligence. There are many […]

New #AsiaNow post: JAS Editor Joseph Alter discusses how increased use of AI has led to more submissions to the journal (almost 800 in 2025!) and also prompted him to think about the relationship between an author and their work.

The Litigators by John Grisham. Moves fast with a light touch and some nice humour, though the humour can be perhaps a bit cliched. And the paragraphs are short - suddenly you've read five chapters in a short stint! I like that.
