Before the Civil War, New York City banks held mortgages on a vast number of Southern plantations and the enslaved people who worked them, with some estimates suggesting 40 cents of every dollar from cotton production went to Northern financiers. ๐Ÿ—ƒ๏ธ #history

Should we explore what happened to each of the 41 #dreadnoughts held by Britian & Germany in 1914? 4 of them were involved in a little diplomatic game with the Ottoman Empire

Really interested in a biography of Constantinople (err, Istanbul). A real contender (with Jerusalem, Baghdad) for the most enduringly consequential city.

Love when I come across notes from #history books totally unrelated to the topic. Turns out Jack Kerouac was a troll. This note literally captioned with "lolwut"

The life of General MacArthur was wild.
- Served in WW1
- Military advisor in Philippines (he resigned as General to do this!)
- Two supreme commanderships (dope title): U.S. Forces in Far East, and of Allied Powers in Japan
- Oh, also involved in US Olympic Committee

It's hard to grapple with just how embedded the #KKK was in everyday society in the 1920s. In many localities (particularly in midwest), more than half of people were involved.

(not so) fun fact: The KKK was in part a mid-level marketing scheme. The vile D.C. Stephenson got rich, and so did some of the pastors he gave kickbacks to.
Some of those fees went to the costumes, btw.

Kinda weird to think that just 200 years ago venture capitalists were funding whaling expeditions. Try to imagine the Zuckerberg of 1800 pitching his expedition to investors.

A great article on what happened to those 250K+ planes after the war. Really hard to overstate just how many there were. For context: There are 5-10K commercial airplanes in the US: www.statista.com/statistics/1...

The US produced over 300,000 aircraft during #WW2. For reference, @boeingairplanes.bsky.social delivered about 340 planes in 2024. โœˆ๏ธ ๐ŸŽ–๏ธ

The scale of the #WW2 wartime US economy is unfathomable. At peak, we were producing a full Luftwaffe worth of planes every 11 days. That's a plan every. four. minutes.

May 7, 1915 aside, the Lusitania must have been quite exquisite. Except, perhaps, for the 300 (!!) folks in charge of maintaining a roaring fire at all times. ๐Ÿšข ๐Ÿ”ฅ
