Instructions for making mosquito-killing buckets. Cheap, effective, and won't harm butterflies, fireflies, pets, or birds like pyrethroid sprays do. Spring is a great time to set them out. #mosquitoes colinpurrington.com/2024/08/bti-...

Bluesky, we need your help to count walrus! 🦭
Previously on "Walrus from Space", volunteers like you sifted through around 500,000 satellite images to support our conservation research.
Now we're asking the you to help us count the walrus in those images 👀

I read "Bruny" shortly after visiting the island for the first time -such a marvellous place. I have strong issues with this book, but @eliasgreig.bsky.social articulated them far better here: overland.org.au/previous-iss...

A middle-aged man (played by actor Richard Harris) tries to disarm a bomb.
Muss ich immer an "Juggernaut" (dt. Titel "18 Stunden bis zur Ewigkeit") mit Richard Harris, Omar Sharif etc. denken. Nicht unbedingt realistisch, aber sehr spannend!
A collage of 14 inspirational women in science from various eras and backgrounds, including Marie Curie, Jane Goodall, and Katherine Johnson. The center text reads "Honoring Inspirational Women in Science" and "International Women’s Day 2026."
Today, I have been reflecting on the incredible women who have transformed their fields despite systemic barriers. Their dedication and grit paved the way for the next generation of women scientists. Let’s come together to honor their accomplishments and commit to a more inclusive future.🧪👩🔬

How does life evolve to adapt to modern cities?
Out now in Science, my PhD work with @lindymcbr.bsky.social uncovers the ancient origin of the “London Underground mosquito” – one of the most iconic examples of urban adaptation.

For more details see Yuki's thread here: bsky.app/profile/yuki..., and their paper here in @science.org: www.science.org/doi/10.1126/.... [3/3]
This hypothesis has been thoroughly disproven by @yukihaba.bsky.social @lindymcbr.bsky.social et al., who could show that the molestus form diverged from pipiens several thousand years ago, possibly near Egypt, and in response to #agriculture. [2/3]
🦟 Bit surprised and disappointed that JM Mulet, writing in @elpais.com, rehashes the idea that the "London Underground #mosquito" (Culex pipiens form molestus) only emerged in the last 160 years by adaptation to life underground. [1/3]
