Time Management Tools. When choosing a time management tool, the simpler the better. My tools tend to go into three categories: The Calendar (or schedule), The List, and The Table. There are small black and white icons of a calendar, checklist, and table chart.

What is time management? Usually when we think about time management, we think about "efficiency" and "productivity". In capitalist thinking, time is a limited resource. We want to use our resources to make numbers get bigger. Time is how we live. Time management is about how we choose to live our lives. It's about being in control when we make that choice. How do you want to spend your time?

Time is how we live. It's a lot of funny, incomprehensible things.

The one thing time isn't is a means to an end.

Slow down. The more there is to do, the slower you should go. It feels really counterintuitive. However, when you go fast, you increase the risk of making a mistake. Fixing a mistake uses more time than doing the thing slowly, but accurately in the first place. Mistakes are also unpredictable, it is harder to be in control o f how you spend your time because you can't predict your mistakes. It's impossible to avoid all mistakes, but minimizing the need to go back and redo things improves overall time management.

Do make it enjoyable! We are more likely to do things we enjoy. This is not a bad thing. It's actually a really great thing because now we know how to do the things that are hard for us - make it more enjoyable. Are all time management tasks the Worst Things Ever? How can you make them more enjoyable? Maybe it IS the pretty notebook. Maybe it's something else entirely. Do what YOU enjoy.

Mistakes are an opportunity. Time management mistakes are just mistakes. They can be big or small, tell us a lot or absolutely nothing. However, when our time management mistakes impact another person, it is an opportunity to strengthen that relationship. How do you own and communicate that mistake? How can you collaborate with that person to mitigate the mistake? How do you ask for help and understanding?

Make mistakes. Perfect time management doesn't exist! We are human and so our time management is also human. Always be willing to make mistakes. Yes, mistakes show us where we can improve, but they ALSO can show us our desires. If you doublebook something on your calendar - what does that tell you about the things you doublebooked? If you're always late to one event - why?

If the system is complex, it's harder to keep track of. Effective time management is boring and easy. As you learn more about your personal time management needs, the system will probably get more complex. But always make sure you know every single part of the system.

This is actually the part of time management I find the hardest - I LOVE complicated systems. When it's simple, I get bored and start making it complicated.

Principles of Time Management: 1. Start as simple as possible. 2. Make mistakes. 3. Don't make it pretty. 4. Do make it enjoyable. 5. Only automate something you can do manually 6. If something doesn't work, throw it out 7. Taking time to plan reduces overall time spent

Some principles I stick to with time management. This was just an exercise to see what I could come up with - I don't think anything is set in stone. The most important principle of time management is to do what works best for you!
