The RVInvestigator is heading to Antarctica again this summer to the Cook a glacier led by Dr Linda Armbrecht @utas. Opportunities to bring Antarctic science to your classroom with the Sea2school programme - primary schools to university classes. Any time zone 24/7. 🌊🇦🇶❄️🧊🔬🧬🧪
Congratulations to Dr Linda Armbrecht on receiving the Australian Academy of Science Dorothy Hill Award today for her pioneering work on extracting AsedDNA from sediment cores to provide a new proxy on past changes in climate and biodiversity of Antarctic ecosystem’s. Photo @alixpost.bsky.social
@ausquaternary.bsky.social Aus research students and ECRs working on microfossils don’t forget to apply for the Prof Leanne Armand travel award to work with an expert to improve your skills. Deadline 28th sept. More information on the aqua.org.au website. 🌊🔬
Geologists from planet earth - new podcasts interviewing geologists - challenging the stereotypes of geologists - nice to hear one by dr Chris Carson who recently was awarded the Australian Antarctic medal for his work on Antarctic geology. 🪨❄️🇦🇶🧪🚢🗻
Delighted to announce a new 📖 just out - well at least the online version (print version still a few weeks off)

❄️ A landmark new study has revealed that glaciers on Australia’s remote sub-Antarctic Heard Island are shrinking at an accelerating rate due to rising temperatures and climate change.

New #DEACoastlines annual shoreline data for 2024 is now live! 🌊🛰️🎉
2024 was a relatively stable year for coastal change across Australia, with mostly moderate and balanced rates of growth and retreat across our coastline.

Looking forward to seeing what the sediment team uncover about past changes in the Denman Glacier system.
Offshore to the west of the Denman Glacier, the Kasten core sediment tubes keep on coming - and this one, retrieved from the seafloor this week, is a keeper #DMV

Great work by the oceanography team on the Denman Marine voyage #DMV
🌊 Like weather stations for the sea, the Denman Marine Voyage #DMV has installed three moorings off the ice shelf in East #Antarctica, to monitor ocean heat for the next few years before we come back to get them.

Great to be able to track Australia’s icebreaker Nuyina from space while it’shard at work off the Shackleton Ice Shelf!
Linda has made such amazing contributions in the field of ancient DNA from Antarctic sediments. Very well-deserved award!

A screenshot of https://www.icelogistics.info/antarctic showing a Sentinel-1C image of the Brunt Ice Shelf displayed on the map viewer. Sea ice is dark black and hazy grey shades, and the ice shelf is brighter grey and white. Details of the images can be seen in a pop up.
🎉 Imagery from the newly launched Sentinel-1C Copernicus satellite is now accessible via Polar View www.polarview.aq and the Ice Logistics Portal www.icelogistics.info/antarctic?ce...! This addition significantly increases the repeatability of SAR observations in the Polar Regions 🛰️
What does the deep seafloor in a previously-uncharted canyon off the edge of the continental shelf in eastern Antarctica look like?
Craig Johnson captures the wonder, awe and sheer joy of finding out by using a deep sea camera tow, in our latest #DMV #blog post ⬇️

The first rock dredges of the #DMV have delivered - and many rocks found seem to have come from beneath the vast Denman Glacier.
There are signs the region might be a particularly warm area geothermally, and this can impact on the base, writes Jo Whittaker ⬇️ #blog

What lies beneath 🌊
Dramatically-reduced sea ice cover in front of the tongue of the Denman Glacier has allowed a rare exploration opportunity on the #DMV

The first Kasten core deployment has extracted a tube of mud from the #Antarctic seafloor. Once in the lab, the sampling begins for traces of ancient eDNA (AAD team) and porewater, and measuring for thermal conductivity.

ICESat-2 fired its TWO TRILLIONTH laser shot last weekend, and it hit off the coast of East Antarctica, right by Australia’s Casey station! Yay for @thenasaearth.bsky.social and all the incredible satellites we have monitoring planet Earth for the benefit of humanity…

🌊 "As an oceanographer, I’m excited about the prospect of getting ocean, ice and climate data from a region where few observations have been collected.
The only way to get information like this is to be there."
