Music! Niv is a musician and she plays and writes music to express herself as well as for her job. Elyan loves music but was told as a kid that he was no good and it was a waste of time so he stopped. Niv’s been trying to convince him to try again.

I describe weather to show something about the character (e.g. Elyan hates getting rained on and being in the sun, and is incapable of remembering that hats exist). Niv is determined to be stoic about bad weather because she doesn’t want to stand out as a city girl.

Niv adopted a telepathic cat who almost exclusively talks to her, and one of Elyan’s horses is telepathic though the other chooses not to communicate with humans that way, preferring empathy. Rathaliel never heard of animal telepathy until she met Niv.

I love a good internal monologue! As my characters are all neurodivergent they’ll be doing something at the same time (like throwing sticks off a roof, making a mini garden out of leaves and twigs, taking star smoke etc) but so much goes on in their heads!

Elyan uses body empathy to read his partner’s movements & has a fair amount of natural grace & rhythm. Rathaliel hated the court dances she grew up with as too stiff & formal, but now appreciates outlander dances. Niv is always playing the music for others to dance.

My characters make friends accidentally as most neurodivergent folks seem to. Elyan gave Niv a lift when she was first trying to join a travelling player troupe. Elyan and Rathaliel met when she saved him from getting kidnapped or stabbed and Niv & Rathi met through him.

A lot more new-to-me books and authors this month, mostly because of #TRR! I think my favourite first time read was Tadek and the Princess but I also really loved Darius the Great, The Love Study, The Witch King, After Hours at Dooryard Books… A really great month of reading!

I had three the same (Game Changers), one I read last year (Out of the Blue) and another currently in the stack of books on my couch that I haven’t got to yet (Woodworking)!

ALL OF THEM, lol. All my characters are some blend of neurospicy. ADHD is probably more dominant in Elyan and Niv and autism in Rathaliel, but it’s no accident they get along so well.
