Sometimes on trail cameras in Monks Wood NNR we detect these black feral cats, living totally wild in the wood for decades, maybe centuries, without any human interaction. Always black, very stocky, rarely seen. I found a dead kitten once. They live as Wild Cats, just as elusive, undocumented.

Ooh even better!! Thank you!!
A close up of a section of Hazel leaf (underside) showing some glandular hairs along the central vein and some pale yellowy-green aphids.
A wider view of the underside of a Hazel leaf, with pale aphids quite visible against the slightly darker green leaf.
I spent some time checking fresh growth of Hazel for Large Hazel Aphid Corylobium avellanae, which has a preference for buds and new growth. I didn't find any, but there were plenty of Small Hazel Aphids Myzocallis coryli (influentialpoints.com/Gallery/Myzo...) on the undersides of the leaves.
Ash dieback is having some odd disturbance effects in ancient woodland. The extra light under dying ash canopy is allowing these wild roses to go crazy, scrambling up the tree trunks to heights of 7 m, forming these funky columns.

Sound up for 'demand calls' of a female Marsh Tit. They give this call when demanding extra food from their male, when forming eggs or, like here, during regular breaks from incubation. It's a sure sign of a nest nearby. Used to be called 'begging call', but it's more like nagging, she's in charge!
It’s not rocket science… a bit of urban recording in #Shrewsbury yields Eruca sativa, Rocket #pavementplants #urbanbotany
A top-down view of the weevil, on a plain pale background. Its body is covered in scales, mostly dark, with several bright white patches.
Today's new species is courtesy of my wife ❤️, who found this very lovely weevil on her sandwich at lunchtime, & kindly passed it over to me: Mogulones asperifoliarum, which was likely carried in from the garden where it feeds on forget-me-nots & related plants. #beetles #weevils

This Monks Wood #rewilding (natural colonisation) plot is 30 years old this year. It's taken that long for this single Bluebell to migrate 20m from adjacent ancient woodland to colonise the plot. But now it's here, joining the growing trees & shrubs: future ancient woodland in the making.
Is someone you know new to #WildlifeRecording but already making their mark? Are they making a difference and increasing our understanding of nature in the UK? If so, why not nominate them for the NBN Newcomer Award? bit.ly/NBNawards26n... Deadline - 18 May #NBNawards26 @nbntrust.bsky.social
We have just updated our guidance on what and when to feed garden birds: Feed seasonally. Feed safely.
To reduce disease, we all need to make some urgent but simple changes to how we feed our garden birds.
