New paper in TREE: we propose a framework to think more clearly about the scale of climate exposure of organisms—and why mismatches between climate data and biology can mislead ecological inference.

Hard not to see the irony: UN climate chief Simon Stiell asking the COP hosts for “a clear plan to bring temperatures down in the next 24 hours” — about the venue, not the planet. www.oc.eco.br/wp-content/u...
Rather pleased @windmillfarm.bsky.social managed to relocate this beauty of a Steppe Grey Shrike just down the road from me. The mop was less impressed but seemed to enjoy the walk there.
Fun to be part of this with the two Pieters + team. Double the Pieter, double the insight into forest microclimate monitoring
RENEW Research paper provides a flexible approach for nature recovery in landscapes with multiple choices for habitat creation. Read more about the Ebrel model: besjournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.... #naturerecovery #biodiversityrenewal @exeter.ac.uk @uniofexeteresi.bsky.social
Nice to see my former PhD student, Brit Trew, get a bit of press coverage of her final PhD chapter. An important consideration: news.mongabay.com/2025/06/to-s.... @alexanderlees.bsky.social @reganearly.bsky.social
No photo, but bumped into a Quail on my @btobirds.bsky.social Heathland Bird Survey on the Lizard—last visit it was a Hoopoe. Here's a Dartford Warbler from the same square as consolation
Cornwall in May: the sea’s still freezing, but at least the cliffs look nice
Great find! Is that why you were late for our lab group meeting? I am suprised you turned up at all. I wouldn't have! For future reference - finding rarities is an 100% acceptable excuse for missing meetings:-)
I see Shell has unveiled its new #rewilding policy
Not very often I take selfies, but couldn't resist taking one with this Shoebill
Green-breasted Pitta! Just 27 years of searching forest in Uganda to finally see one of these, and then like buses two pop along
New article. In this piece, we highlight the importance of designing agri-environment schemes (AES) with clear and measurable targets and aligning those with an understanding of how land managers interact with nature.

My final PhD chapter published in FEE (Frontiers in Ecology and the Environment): re-mapping Köppen-Geiger climate zones, but now using microclimate! Very excited to have this one out:

@richgreg3.bsky.social explains how Georgina's science prompted this special issue which contains 16 papers building on her work. I am forever grateful to have known and worked with Georgina, a special person who had a profound impact on conservation science community.rspb.org.uk/ourwork/b/sc...
A great write-up, albeit with worrying conclusions, of Joe's recent paper which forms part of a special issue in Phil Trans B commemorating the life and work of the brilliant Georgina Mace. Link to full paper in post👇

🚨New paper 🚨We argue that abrupt biodiversity losses can be driven by populations sharing similar tolerances to warming 🦋🌎🥵. Out now in @royalsocietypublishing.org. Summary thread below 🧵

Every year, I do a bit of a round-up of the the birds seen on my local patch - the Lizard Peninsula. 2024 was quite a good year, but then actually most are: www.lizardbirds.net/post/2024-ye.... What will 2025 bring?
Really great to see this large and important dataset being made publicly available
Starting out doing microclimate research? Then worth a read of our new OA paper
That will be Great Spooted Woodpecker - the Lesser Spotted Woidpecker's larger cousin. They're doing OK in the UK too. Lesser Spotted don't occur in Ireland
It's been ages since I last saw a Lesser Spotted Woodpecker in the UK. When I lived in Norfolk, they used to be a bird you’d just bump into from time to time. Sobering to see how quickly they're vanishing from our landscapes though. Really should look for one sometime while I have the chance
Half way to 100, but who's counting:-)
I'm happy to use my first #Bluesky post to announce that there's now a shiny app for the endotherm model of the #NicheMapR package bioforecasts.science.unimelb.edu.au/app_direct/e...
Come do a PhD with Sinead English @englishse.bsky.social , Dan Padfield @padpadpadpad.bsky.social and me on Gulls! GPS- and Bluetooth-tracking! Microbiomes & AMR acquisition & transmission! Human-wildlife conflict & mitigation! should be fun :-)
I'm thrilled to have had the opportunity to champion Silver-studded Blues in this wonderful new film celebrating the Cornish Mining World Heritage Site. Cornwall's former mining sites provide an important refuge for several of our most threatened butterfly species.

There is still space left in the #biodiversity #redistribution starter pack ⬇️ If you are working on or interested in biodiversity responses, aka #species #range #shifts & #community #composition #changes, to global change drivers, I'd be happy to add you in the list 😀

Our OA paper in led by former PhD student James Stewart, with @robwilsonmncn.bsky.social et al shows how varying phenology can influence range shifts via effects on population dynamics and mediated by biotic interactions, #BrownArgus (not Sparrow:-)
