Next week, Catalyze SV, SPUR, & WoodWorks are hosting, alongside our sponsors Aedis Architects & MassFrame Solutions, the 3rd event in our Mass Timber Momentum series!
Last week, we had an incredible turnout for our successful virtual event about folks building #masstimber projects in #california.

'What we need is a rainstorm of housing. We need a deluge of new housing to provide for the people who are already here, the people growing up here, the people who are trying to move back here, and the new immigrants who deserve to be here, as well'.”
'If we don’t build enough housing on Pleasant Hills, it’s like we’re in a drought, and we say, ‘One day of rain will be OK. If we just get a day of rainfall, we’ll get back to where we need to go.'
Shoor said the housing crisis in Silicon Valley — with average homes in San José valued at roughly $1.4 million — and the Bay Area needs to be treated with more urgency by officials around the region, and compared the situation to California’s drought cycles.
"'We either build a lot of housing on this site, and we’re actually serious about solving the housing crisis, or we have elected officials and civic leaders who continue to pay lip service to housing while doing nowhere near enough to solve the real issues.'
Our Executive Director @alexshoor.bsky.social is quoted in this KQED story, talking about why Pleasant Hills needs a lot more #housing than the mostly 1950s, stale, sprawling, single-family homes proposal:

Catalyze SV was today years old when we learned about this valuable resource from the @mtcbata.bsky.social for folks to find #AffordableHousing in 8 counties in the #bayarea.

Here’s a preview of what we’ll be teaching, translated into each language.
Thanks to San Jose's Office of Racial & Social Equity for making this day possible and @dreamingcollab.bsky.social for shaping the curriculum.

Whether in #korean #chinese #hindi #tagalog or English, join us at the @cityofsanjose Cypress Community Center on Saturday, February 28, for a day's worth of free knowledge about different types of government and how YOU can get involved!
Coming to the US from another country and speaking another language erects an even taller barrier to knowing about different types of government and how you can get involved.
So the City's Office of Racial & Social Equity & @dreamingcollab.bsky.social sought to change that, and now we want to too!
Catalyze SV cares so much about #inclusive #CivicEngagement & #CommunityEngagement because the folks most impacted by government decisions are often the ones least likely to participate.
We're grateful to Manish Sabu (via the incomparable Shalini Gupta) and LEAD Filipino organizer Aljon Claveria for jumping in as additional collaborators/instructors!

In 2025, Catalyze SV and partners Society of Heart's Delight & Korean American Community Services were awarded a grant by the @cityofsanjose.bsky.social Office of Racial and Social Equity and Betty Nguyen.

Proponents argue that #masstimber can make developments quicker, cheaper, taller, & more green. But it's astounding how little is known about it here.
So stay tuned for our 2026 efforts to encourage the development industry and policymakers to use mass timber here.
If #SanJose is the capital of #SiliconValley, and if the Valley is known for #innovation, then how about we start building more projects using the newer type of construction material, mass timber?

Will they or won't they?
That's the❓on the minds of all of us tracking this Google project that Catalyze SV members scored so favorably 5 years ago.
It sucks: the land @cityofsanjose.bsky.social sold is in Google's hands forever. The City seemingly can't get it back or speed up development.
Catalyze SV scored this project “Most Improved” a couple of years ago. We feel you on some of your gripes.
