Hi, all #DevonBookHour I absolutely loved A Scots Quair, Ian. Not hard to understand why it was voted Scotland’s most favorite novel. Although it takes place in the long ago and is told in the old Scots vernacular English, the story feels timeless. Def one of my fave reads from last year.📚🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Full-length bronze statue of Rev. Father Godfrey Schilling standing with one hand raised as if in benediction, the other cradling a small replica of the church he founded, his long monastic robe tarnished with age (verdigris). I do love how statues age. #verdigris #patina #bronze

Beautiful write-up, Susan! I just revisited Orwell’s “1984”...unnerving! I read a different book by Solnit awhile ago called “River of Shadows”, about a technical genius in motion pictures named Muybridge. Interesting person but dull reading. Glad to hear “Orwell’s Roses” is better!🌹 #BlueBrewBooks

An image of a short poem by Chief Dan George called “And My Heart Soars”:

The beauty of the trees,
the softness of the air,
the fragrance of the grass,
speaks to me.
The summit of the mountain,
the thunder of the sky,
the rhythm of the sea,
speaks to me.
The faintness of the stars,
the freshness of the morning,
the dew drop on the flower,
speaks to me.
The strength of fire,
the taste of salmon,
the trail of the sun,
And the life that never goes away,
They speak to me.
And my heart soars.

Yes, me too. Totally wasted on us in high school! Tho’ I have to say it stuck with me, not so much the story as the symbolism Hesse used.🙏🏻🤷‍♀️ #devonbookhour

Loved The Interpreter of Maladies. Not every short-story collection holds together as well as this one. I marveled at her ability to make these stories come alive on the page. Well deserving of all the accolades.🙏🏻📚 #devonbookhour

I recently reread Siddhartha & enjoyed his search for meaning in all the wrong places—his well-to-do parents’ house, at a courtesan’s pleasure grove, in a mansion he acquires, in gaming halls where he blows a fortune, and finally by a river where he finds enlightenment as a ferryman.🙏🏻 #devonbookhour

Loved the 1st one in the series “Silver Pigs” in which smart-alec private informer Marcus Didius Falco gets sent to Britain - then the far fringes of the Roman Empire - to investigate who’s stealing from the silver mines there. Great fun!📚 #BlueBrewBooks
