Deep-sea wildernesses are more important than the promise of seafloor mining (analysis) When I set sail on the MV NorSky in the summer of 2008 to probe the depths of Manus Basin off the coast of Papua New Guinea, I believed in the promise of deep-sea mining. As an early-career deep-sea e...

The only thing inevitable in the deep sea is discovery.

Deep-sea wildernesses are more important than the promise of seafloor mining.

Once upon a time I just admired nudis and sea slugs.

But it was not enough. Now apparently I'm creating an R package to celebrate their colour palettes? πŸ˜…

First up, my Sydney fave, Hypselodoris bennetti.

A tiny sea slug in a tidepool. Shades of vibrant green with white spots, black edging to its mantle, and a rich purple on its "horns". The lower half of the image contains 5 swatches of the slug's colours.

Not a nudi, but a sacoglossan sap-sucking sea slug, Elysia coodgeensis. 10/10 for alliteration, 12/10 for being tiny & stylish.

The R package is just in need of some testing, and in the meantime, more palette-cards coming soon! 🎨

All the heart eyes for these tiny wonders 😍

Many animals that live in the dim waters of the ocean’s twilight zone have evolved powerful eyes to detect prey, mates, and predators in the dark. Hyperiid amphipods have developed remarkably diverse eyes, each with different functional capabilities.

Slow your scroll and float with Flota ✨

The midwater bristle worm (Flota sp.) is a free-swimming worm often seen near the deep seafloor, more than 1,500 meters (4,921 feet) below the surface. These fascinating worms propel themselves by moving their bodies, parapodia, and spines. #MondayMood

This happens because the calcium carbonate that makes up most shells dissolves under the high pressure and unique chemical conditions of the deep ocean without active maintenance of the snail. Image from www.forbes.com/sites/allene...

Deep-sea hermit crabs from the Parapaguridae family live 1,000+ meters deep! Unlike typical hermits, they often use soft β€œhomes” made by anemones or zoanthids instead of shells. #marinelife Image from @schmidtocean.bsky.social
