Very proud of this work and all the efforts from my team and collaborators on this! You can now use DGRs for in vivo targeted hypermutagenesis in E. coli. We also included some early proof of concept in Yeast thanks to @seth-shipman.bsky.social !

Yesterday our paper "Intra-species competition combats vancomycin-resistant enterococci" was published online.
We found an enterococcal strain that can outcompete a VRE strain, but loses its potency when given with other non resistant Enterococci.

Here is a high res img from the battle in the gut:

➑️ preprint from the lab! Bacteria have loads of antiviral defences in their mobile genetic elements (MGEs). So when MGEs move between bacteria, the defences move with them, generating a fast turnover of defences in bacteria. But what about the antiviral defence turnover in the MGEs themselves? πŸ€”

🚨 New preprint 🚨

How promiscuous really are conjugative plasmids, and what does that mean for plasmid co-occurrence?

A pleasure to collaborate with @craigmaclean.bsky.social on the first paper of my fellowship!
