The core premise of my research has been the same since my first article on the "politics of shark attacks" in 2012:
1) The shark is a fish, not a movie monster
2) The human is a land animal, not neutral actor in the ocean
3) The ocean/beach is the wild, not a remote paradise

Cristina Zenato works in the wild with sharks, where she has built a special relationship with a local shiver of Caribbean Reef sharks. Many recognize her and approach her touch. She uses this connection to remove hooks from their mouths.

PNW rains have returned, hopefully soon orcas do too as it appeared the group was possibly heading out yesterday. Meanwhile, we revel in the grays who remain: Little Patch & Stardust plus others were seen this week.

A Paletail Damsel (Pomacentrus trichrourus) swimming just above a Day Octopus (Octopus cyanea). The octopus is clinging to the side of a rock and is leaning over and above the sea floor, so it looks as if the octopus is leaning back to dodge the fish. The octopus's arms are going in different directions, with some looking back. The octopus has its a very bumpy and wrinkly skin on its head and mantle. It is a mix of white and dark red. The dish is black with a white tail.

"Meet Gerald — the dolphin who’s been pulling up on us since December here in Icacos, Puerto Rico 🇵🇷
He doesn’t show up every day… but when he does, he stays 🤯
Swimming with us, following us around, just vibing like part of the crew."
Two marine operations crew members retrieve an autonomous robot. The crew are wearing white hard hats and orange life vests. They are holding orange sticks and guiding a robot suspended from a white metal crane by an orange rope. The robot has a cylindrical plastic housing with an orange tail cone, a yellow midsection, an orange nose cone, and two paddle-shaped cameras. On the ship’s gray metal deck is a black cart. In the background is blue ocean with cloudy blue sky on the horizon.
A scientist looks into a microscope in the lab aboard a research ship. They are wearing purple gloves and are seated in front of a counter, adjusting samples under the microscope. In the background are black pipes and laboratory equipment.

We awake to another lovely PNW day w/whales & sunshine, blossoms & buds unfurling; a special time of year.
Yesterday, orcas & plethora of grays. Minkes & a humpback reported too, but no photo confirmation for them.

A close up of Octopoteuthis deletron swimming in a strange pose. It facing away from the camera, with its arms are raised up and back over its mantle, making a sideways U shape. Its fins are are wrapped around its mantle. You can clear see the zigzag row of little white hooks on its arms and the white photophores on the tips of its arms. The photophores have been curved. The squid is orange.
A Schoolmaster Armhook Squid (Berryteuthis magister) swimming above the sea floor with its limbs swung back. There is some ink in the water as the squid recently inked. All eight arms and its two tentacles are swung back. Its arms have two rows of hooks that are visible, with the two tentacle having no hooks. The squid's beak if clearly visible as none of its limbs are blocking it. It has a large mantle with two large fins on the end half of the mantle. The squid has an orange colour with white on the underside. The sea floor is rocky with lots of round rocks, and it is about 65 m below the surface.
A close up of a warty squid's (Onykia robsoni) hooks. The image covers about 3.5 cm. Its a bunch of hooks coming out of a squid's limb. They seem to have a fleshy sheath. The arm is white and orange.
The hooks on the tentacle club of a colossal squid (Mesonychoteuthis hamiltoni). There are several hooks in two rows poking out of fleshy sheaths. These hooks can rotate and each row flanked by a row of tiny, marginal suckers. The arm is a mix of off white and desaturated slightly purplish red
Many squid species have hooks on their arms, tentacles or both. These hooks are used to help grab and hold onto their prey. I definitely wouldn't want to be on the business end of one of these squid!
What's even more amazing is this adaptation shows up in several different squid families!
This is great news! Bottom trawlers drag their nets along the ocean floor, indiscriminately disrupting or destroying anything in their path.
It's so important to protect vulnerable habitats like coral reefs from this practice. 🪸🐠

there is an old Richard Jeni bit where he talks about going to the seafood restaurant and seeing all the crabs and lobsters in the front tank looking like prisoners and 'can someone call the governor? Help!?' - I think of that every time I go to a nearby store that has tanks like that - so sad :(

Brazil has created the South Atlantic’s largest marine protected area, spanning about one million hectares. Supported by Conservation International, the reserve—roughly the size of Jamaica—aims to safeguard biodiversity, fisheries, and critical ocean ecosystems.
A Two-toned Pygmy Squid (Idiosepius pygmaeus) grappling a transparent shrimp. The shrimp is facing towards the camera. The squid is covered in orange chromatophores, and while not obvious from the photo, it is very small. The shrimp has a clear transparent body and translucent arms. It is perpendicular to the camera, and the squid is holding the shrimp's head closest to its beak. There are rich purple sea pens making up the background.
It's really impressive how pygmy squids can take down shrimps that are almost big as they are (which isn't much, this species only grows to a mantle length of 20 mm!)
