🎉 Happy to share that Dr. Corey Kull and I have been awarded an ESRA research grant for our ongoing study at URCA (CHUV, Lausanne), comparing pericapsular nerve block vs. intrathecal morphine for postoperative pain after hip arthroplasty!

Thanks @esraeurope.org for the support!

🆕 We compared 10 ml vs 20 ml ropivacaine for extrafascial interscalene blocks. Published in BJA!

💡 Key finding:
Diaphragmatic paralysis ↓ from 80% ➝ 19% with 10 ml
But: shorter analgesia & ↑ mo use

🎉 New open access editorial just publishedin in AAS.
Together with Dr. Maagaard and Prof. Mathiesen, we discuss ways to prolong peripheral nerve blocks—a key topic in regional anesthesia and pain management.

SRMA: Neuraxial hydromorphone modestly reduces postoperative pain scores (MD -0.4) without increasing nausea/vomiting but triples pruritus risk (RR 3.1). Evidence quality is very low, with more studies needed to confirm findings. #Analgesia #Anesthesia #Research"

Another SRMA (168 studies, 9917 patients). Intrathecal morphine increases PONV (OR 1.52), pruritus (OR 6.11), and urinary retention (OR 1.73), regardless of dose. Evidence quality is low. #Analgesia #Anaesthesia #Research @elboghdadly.bsky.social @bjajournals.bsky.social

New SRMA: Intrathecal diamorphine reduces 24h postoperative IV morphine use (-8 mg on average) but increases PONV risk (RR 1.37). Evidence quality is very low, highlighting the need for more robust studies. #Analgesia #Anaesthesia #Research @elboghdadly.bsky.social @anaesjournal.bsky.social

New meta-analysis: Perineural dexamethasone slightly extends analgesia duration after peripheral nerve block in lower limb surgery compared to IV (22h vs 20h). Statistically significant, but clinically limited impact. Please stick with the iv route. #Analgesia #Research #EJA2024
