With so much going on at the Great Fen, it’s never too soon for an update. This week, I'll be reviewing our progress up to and including 2025. Learn more at the evening indoor meetings of the Rutland Natural History Society (on Tuesday), and also at the Northamptonshire Bird Club (on Wednesday).

The moth survey across the @greatfen.org.uk this week produced some stunning results, including: the impressive Clifden Nonpareil (Blue Underwing), yet another L-album Wainscot, a magnificent male Great Silver Water Beetle, and plenty of the stunning Merveille du Jour.

Delighted to find a female #GreatSilverWaterBeetle in my garden #moth trap this morning. So encouraging to see #wildlife recolonising the area. Perhaps you've got a moth trap you can donate to the @greatfen.org.uk, especially a battery powered one? Contact me www.greatfen.org.uk/wildlife/mon...

Some of the 14x #GreatSilverWaterBeetles recorded today as part of our #GreatFen #moth and water #beetle #monitoring. They were attracted to the light traps at 5 sites in the Fen. Now they are all headed back to where they were caught.

A great weekend ahead at the Great Fen, under its big blue skies in the sunny weather. Looking forward to sharing the wildlife, the history, and the future of the Fens (restoration in action) on the Ecotour this Saturday. Only a couple of places available to book. www.wildlifebcn.org/events/2025-...

The Great Fen #Ecotour is nearly here, and it's encouraging to see lots of wildlife abroad. #Dragonflies and #butterflies are on the wing. Young birds and mammals are out and about, from young #Kingfishers to #WaterVole pups exploring their #wetland world. www.wildlifebcn.org/events/2025-...

First day of www.wildlifebcn.org/30dayswild and the #hawkmoths are out. Great to see an nice selection of these impressive insects our garden this morning. We've also added #StripedHawkmoth to garden list as well! As it's a migratory species, so watch out for this stunning insect.

February's #SpeciesoftheMonth is the short-eared owl (Asio flammeus)!

A daytime flier, the short-eared owl is similar in size to the barn owl and can be spotted on wetland marshes & grassland. In East Anglia short-eared owls are a winter spectacular visiting from Scandinavia, Russia & Iceland.

Watch out for #Fen tigers on the prowl in the sunshine at the #GreatFen. #ScareChaser #dragonflies are stunning when newly emerged from the water. It's an orange coloration the adult female #insect retains, while the male turns blue! Learn more with me next month. www.wildlifebcn.org/events/2025-...
