INTEGRAL: An integral part of high-energy astrophysics.
Launched in 2002, INTEGRAL mapped the high-energy sky for over two decades, revealing gamma-ray bursts, supernovae and matter falling into black holes.
SRON contributed to the mission’s scientific analysis.

Nice! It is, however, an interesting choice to host this tool on GitHub.

The RAS is alarmed by the threat to ground-based astronomy posed by proposals put forward by Elon Musk's SpaceX and Reflect Orbital.
We have opposed the plans with @eso.org and the International Astronomical Union. Find out more at: ras.ac.uk/news-and-pre...
In a recent episode of NTR Focus, SRON explains how methane emissions are monitored from space using Sentinel-5P/TROPOMI and TANGO. Methane causes about one third of global warming, and satellites reveal major emission hotspots worldwide.

A team led by SRON's Liyi Gu and Jelle Kaastra observed a sudden outburst near the supermassive black hole NGC 3783, reaching 20% of light speed. During ten days with mainly XRISM, they saw it form and accelerate—likely driven by untwisting magnetic field lines, similar to solar flares. ✨
We have released SPEX 3.08.02! The new version, among other things, features a new table model that can use Xspec formatted table models, like APEC and Xillver. The new version is available here: spex-xray.github.io/spex-help/ge...
Are you a researcher in high-energy astrophysics and do you want to visit @sronspace.bsky.social? There is a new call for visits through the ACME project. See the ACME website for details: www.acme-astro.eu/tna-calls-ce...
We are incredibly proud that Prof. Ilse Aben has been awarded the NWO Stevin Prize!
Her work provides governments and companies with tools to reduce #methane emissions from oil and gas fields, coal mines, and landfills.
“I see this award as recognition for TROPOMI and everyone who contributed.”
A European team led by the Netherlands (Konstantinos Migkas, SRON, Universiteit Leiden) found a huge filament of hot gas linking four galaxy clusters. This warm-hot intergalactic medium spans 23 million light-years and may be the ‘missing normal matter’.

This is a devastating picture… 😢There are a couple of missions in there that are ESA or JAXA led, like XMM, XRISM an Euclid. These missions will most likely remain in operation, but with much less/no support on the US side (if this budget passes). These may need another symbol than a red cross.

Interessant draadje hierover.

The deadline for the ACME call for visits to @sronspace.bsky.social is April 6th! If you are a researcher and want to visit us to learn about X-ray spectroscopy, please apply through the link below.
Our institute @sronspace.bsky.social has a new logo and website. And they are active now on Bluesky! Check it out!
Proudly launching our new brand identity!
This modern identity marks the beginning of a new chapter for SRON as we continue our mission to advance space research and technology.
A new brand identity also means a brand-new website! Check it out: www.sron.nl

An image of a total solar eclipse, seen from the moon's surface. The sun's light is a thin ring around a dark Earth, except where the sun is beginning to emerge from behind the Earth, producing what's colloquially called the "diamond ring" effect.
Wow — this shot of a total solar eclipse is truly one of the coolest things I've seen in a long time. Shot from the moon's surface by @firefly-aerospace.bsky.social's Blue Ghost lander, it shows the sun about to emerge from behind the Earth. What a beautiful cosmic perspective! 💍
There is a new opportunity for researchers to visit SRON and learn about X-ray spectroscopy. Your visit can be funded through the ACME Project. The deadline for submissions is April 6th 2025. More details about the program and other host institutes can be found here: acme.in2p3.fr/tna-calls-ce...
