🌊Thrilled to share our #Frontiers special issue on #macroplastic fate & impacts in #rivers!
👥With Pierre Girard (@ufmtoficial.bsky.social), @imogennapper.bsky.social (IUCN Kenya), and Sarah-Jeanne Royer (@theoceancleanup.bsky.social)

Our last paper on #plastics in #riverbanks is out in @elsevierconnect.bsky.social
We found that riverbanks showed higher MA density than other compartments, with river embankments causing one-way #macroplastic transport from banks to river.

Our #review is out now! 🎉
💧 We revealed the occurrence, sources, and behavior of #microplastics and #nanoplastics across #urban water systems, assessing effectiveness of physical separation and chemical/biological degradation technologies.

🌿 We revealed a historical retention of macroplastics in #invasive aquatic vegetation.

Interesting! Removing (not all) plastics is tricky, but this are first steps to remove it from the Environment 🤟🏼 next studies need to work and validate on removing and recycling large quantities of waste (not just few grams)
(Considering that single-use plastic production should be banned and replaced by sustainable alternatives)
Hardly and tricky, but there are still some scientists working on it, from degradation by fungi or bacteria to the use of barriers for larger waste items. Let's see if scientists, policy, politicians and lifestyle will succeed to mitigate plastic pollution in the next years 🧐
🎉We're glad to share our latest paper on #microplastics in #bees with you.
🐝What about #pollination hindered by MPs in urban and rural sites?

Following 10 days of negotiations, #INC5 talks to develop a global #PlasticsTreaty adjourned on 15 August in Geneva without consensus on a text of the instrument.
Negotiations will resume at a future date to be announced: www.unep.org/news-and-sto...

Honoured to be an invited #researcher at @INCPoland to visit @maciejliro.bsky.social and his team.
🍃I shared my research lines and my work in @riparianet through my #workshop on #plastic transport and retention in #rivers 🏞️

🎉 Happy to share our last review on #alien #crayfish in transitional and marine waters.
🦐 Procambarus clarkii found in marine waters in central #Italy #sea.
⚠️ #Invasive crayfish may threaten those new invaded habitats.
What about this new #invasion pathway?
🎉Glad to work together with @maciejliro.bsky.social on #plastics trapped by woody jams in the Aniene river in central #Italy.
Here we found that #macroplastics retained by woody jams can be higher that accumulation due to other type of #vegetation.

Water for people 👪
There can be no life on Earth without clean water.
The EU is reviewing rules to improve water quality by reducing pollutants. End goal: #ZeroPollution by 2050.

🔬New research highlights #microplastics in #tadpoles (0.01 MP/ind), adults (1.52 MP/ind), and habitats of three water #frogs of Pelophylax spp.
🏭Interestingly, elevated quantities of MPs were identified in areas with considerable human activity, such as #İstanbul.
💀 #Microplastics are everywhere, but now also in our #skeleton!
📝Recent #research reveals that MPs accumulate in #human intervertebral discs, #bones, and cartilage.

Terribly hot.
#January2025 was the hottest January on #record since 1940 and likely the hottest January in the last 120,000 years, at 1.745°C above the 1850-1900 IPCC pre-industrial baseline.

Actually not as I'm focusing more on indicators of microplastic pollution and macroplastic retention in freshwater and coastal habitats, but it's an important topic. Are you studying it?
