The findings indicate that current training in risk literacy is likely too abstract, with a need to move beyond teaching general ethical principles toward applied scenario-based training.

Congratulations to Shasha Yu and co-supervisor Fiona Carroll.

New paper from my student, Shasha Yu, which finds a paradox in AI risk: students with technical training have higher awareness of AI risk, but are no better at recognising these in real-world scenarios. They also report greater willingness to adopt AI.

🫀Keeping a young heart… New ICCARP paper in EHJ explores how the myocardium ages - from mitochondrial dysfunction to fibrosis - helping distinguish physiological changes from early disease.

doi.org/10.1093/eurh...

This lays the groundwork for our effort to improve how ageing is classified.

I recently represented ICCARP at a policy event with Andy Street (@prosperuk.bsky.social), discussing the structural challenges of ageing with policymakers & stakeholders.

At ICCARP, we're developing the technical classifications & guidance to tackle ageing-related diseases.

Language learning has reminded me that most progress is incremental and compounding. Persistence matters, and the owl is... highly persuasive.

🧠 Is pineal gland senescence an ageing-related pathology?

In this new paper ICCARP review human evidence of structural & functional changes of the pineal gland with age.

This protocol applies subnormothermic machine perfusion to maintain and recondition whole eyes ex vivo, moving beyond static cold storage that poorly serves the eye's highly metabolic neural structures. (3/4)

Following the first human whole eye transplant, one of the biggest challenges is preserving the retina and optic nerve, which deteriorate within minutes using conventional methods. (2/4)

Thank you to Health and Care Research Wales for their support this year, which enabled me to spend dedicated time working with the team at the Wales Kidney Research Unit at UHW. This support helped define the groundwork for my future research on kidney preservation for transplantation.

As we age, adrenal glands shift gear, making less DHEA/DHEAS & more cortisol (the “stress hormone”).

Linked to dementia, osteoporosis & depression, could this be an ageing-related pathology?

Monasteries & cathedrals with 1,500 years of history, and half-a-billion-year-old rock formations.

After 5+ years in Cardiff, I finally visited West Wales.

As I work on ageing and preservation, I have to wonder what it would take for lifespans to reach these timescales.

The Natural History Museum in London is a true cathedral of science. The architecture alone is breathtaking!

The words on Darwin’s plinth capture its spirit perfectly:
"Freedom of thought is best promoted by the gradual illuminations of men's minds, which follows the advance of science."
