Can Gene Therapy Revolutionize Treatment of Neovascular Age-Related Macular Degeneration This systematic review and meta-analysis (PROSPERO: CRD42024619992) evaluated whether gene therapy provides safe and clinically meaningful efficacy for patients with neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD). The clinical question addressed outcomes in patients with nAMD receiving gene therapy (primarily adeno-associated virus–based anti-VEGF constructs) compared with baseline or standard care contexts, focusing on visual acuity, anatomical response, treatment burden, and safety. Anti-VEGF intravitreal injections remain the current standard of care but require frequent administration and long-term adherence.

Three-dimensional OCT Angiography Visualization of Vortex Vein Varix A 70-year-old woman with high myopia was referred for evaluation of a suspected choroidal mass in her left eye. The axial length of the left eye was 27.10 mm. Fundus photography showed a tessellated fundus without abnormal findings in the peripheral retina (A). Ultra-widefield OCT and angiography (BMizar, TowardPi Medical Technology Group Co, Ltd) of the superotemporal vortex vein demonstrated elevation of the overlying retina corresponding to a vortex vein varix (B, arrow), with localized thickening on the choroidal thickness map (C).

Patients want high-quality care, provider choice, affordability Click here to read the Cover Story, “Paralympian initiates advocacy for eye care.” A key factor to generate new patients for an eye care practice is patient word-of-mouth referrals. To maximize patient advocacy, we must generate patients who are satisfied with their care experience. In addition, happy patients also make for happier practice employees and doctors. Arguably, along with providing high-quality care, generating happy patients satisfied with their care experience is core to our purpose as physicians. To the classical saying “happy spouse, happy house,” we can add “happy patients,

Lysinibacillus fusiformis Endophthalmitis after Intravitreal Anti-VEGF for Retinopathy of Prematurity A preterm infant with aggressive retinopathy of prematurity received bilateral intravitreal ranibizumab injections at an outside neonatal intensive care unit and developed endophthalmitis in the right eye with isolated vitreous exudates without anterior segment or retinal inflammation (A). Response was poor to systemic amphotericin and intravitreal vancomycin and ceftazidime. Pars plana vitrectomy cleared the exudates initially but they reoccurred. Vitreous biopsy identified Lysinibacillus fusiformis by MALDI-TOF (VITEK MS, bioMérieux), an environmental soil bacillus and opportunistic human pathogen.
