And what we need to do more in order to prepare for the next #pandemic.
Importantly improving surveillance is critical: technically simple but politically complexe, as the #PABS negotiations to complete the #PandemicAccord illustrate very well.

Amazing keynote talk by @eddieholmes.bsky.social on the next #pandemic threat at #ESCMIDGlobal2026!
What's on the list:
- Influenza viruses
- Paramyxoviruses
- Coronaviruses

Take-home message at #ESCMIDGlobal2026:
🦟 Releasing Wolbachia-infected mosquitoes can suppress dengue
📉 Sterile male strategy → fewer viable offspring
🌍 Scalable, population-level prevention
Vector control is being reimagined.
Finally the interesting stuff: vaccines delivering other benefits:
Flu vaccine and myocardial infarction protection;
Zoster vaccine associated with reduced incidence of dementia;
MenB vaccine protecting against gonorrhea (maybe).
Yet there are successes:
the #Marburg Outbreak in Ethiopia that was quickly contained;
the rapid sequencing of #chikungunya in Reunion which was then used to identify spread around the world;
the rapid effects of #malaria vaccine roll-out!
And the global environment where there is divestments from health and public health will lead to more disease and suffering.
Infectious diseases remain at the top of priority lists with #Tuberculosis high on the list.

This year in #PublicHealth session at #ESCMIDGlobal2026 starting with strong presentation by @dfisman.bsky.social.

Very wise thoughts on going beyond integrated surveillance of only pathogens that we can culture to full environmental surveillance using metagenomics By @bgzorn.bsky.social at #ESCMIDGlobal2026.
This is proper #publichealth thinking for surveillance!

I counted at least one in the second speaker's presentation!
This is the cool stuff: phage steering - using phages to force evolutionary trade-offs in pathogen!
Sounds a bit Science-fictiony but there's now clinical studies on small groups of patients!

“The Year in Clinical Micro” at #ESCMIDGlobal2026 🔬
A devastating reality:
⚠️ >3 million children died from AMR-related infections in 2022
🌍 Highest burden in Southeast Asia & Africa
💊 Many deaths linked to Watch & Reserve antibiotics
AMR is already a leading cause of child mortality.
“The Year in Clinical Micro” at #ESCMIDGlobal2026 🔬
A rare bright spot in AMR:
💊 First new oral treatments for gonorrhea in decades
➡️ Zoliflodacin & Gepotidacin target MDR N. gonorrhoeae
Innovation is possible—but we must protect these advances with strong stewardship
👏👏 Incredible job covering so many key points, an on the mark lecture by @IDdocAkshatha here at #ESCMIDglobal2026 @ESCMID …She asks the audience to become a DOL, talks risks vs benefits, and a changing landscape where silence is no longer neutral
Fun start at #ESCMIDGlobal2026 chairing, with Angela Novais, an exciting outbreak investigation session bringing together epi and microbiology together!

Very glad to see an almost full room in the outbreak investigation session at #ESCMIDGlobal2026!
Shows clear appetite for #PublicHealth and epi sessions among @escmid.bsky.social members!

Just past the halfway mark of #IGWG6, progress on the #PABS Annex has been incremental at best – putting major pressure on @who.int Member States to conclude negotiations in the next 48–60 hours.
Mid-meeting takeaways 🧵👇🏼
Ending TB is within our reach, but it will take collective action 🤝
The lung health community is united in its effort to break the chain of TB transmission. Now we need world leaders to honour the commitments they made.

En rattrapage, à écouter l'excellente entrevue de mon collègue @yassentch.bsky.social sur l'une des pires crises de tuberculose dans le monde, ici au Québec, au Nunavik. @madhupai.bsky.social @mcgillperl.bsky.social

On #EducationFriday (17 April, 08:30–10:30), I’ll be speaking in the session titled: “Outbreak investigation: through the eyes of a field epidemiologist and public health microbiologist”, organised by the EPIET Alumni Network ESGEM @escmid.bsky.social

Huge congratulations to @drejoanneliu.bsky.social & @tivabaral.bsky.social for launching the Pandemic and Emergency Readiness Lab (PERL) at @mcgillspgh.bsky.social @mcgilldgph.bsky.social
Bravo! 👏🏽👏🏽
Very interesting critical evaluation of things that media struggled with for communication during the #pandemic. @picardonhealth.bsky.social :
-Communicating uncertainty
-Showing the equity impacts

Can't make it to the launch event in person? You can watch the livestream here: www.youtube.com/live/0hD5r_4...
Deep thoughts about the state of the world at the PERL launch: "Maybe the withdrawal of the US from bilateral structures, and the increasing reliance on bilateral agreements, is lifting the blanket and showing us the state of how things have been for a long time".

Very nice to see old #GlobalHealth advocates and colleagues @nschwalbe.bsky.social and @roojinhabibi.org taking about the politics of #pandemic preparedness during the @mcgillspgh.bsky.social Pandemic and Emergency Readiness Lab (PERL) launch.
