Kicking off right now: #NavigatingThePast Conference

Congrats to the newly commissioned 2nd Lts of the Columbus State University Army ROTC Cougar Battalion! It was an honor and a privilege to be your history professor last fall.
History friends: if you know of any recently graduated PhDs or soon to be graduating PhDs looking for a job, we need a US historian for next year!

I just registered for the Southern Association for Women Historians (SAWH) Triennial Conference at Bethune-Cookman University this June! Are you going?
Inspired by Revolutionary Songs & Michelle Orihel's piece on Toasting, I had students write toasts or song lyrics based on Patriots' or Loyalists' perspectives. They worked in groups & had 15 minutes but they were creative, referenced specific historical themes or events & had fun. #teachingwin
My favorite way to start a trip. :)
Excited to see my fellow blue jacket historians in Annapolis soon.

Starting a new project:
“A sailor wife sat out on the shore,
& dreamed of a ship on the deep,
But her sailorman she saw no more,
For he slept in a sound, sound sleep...
The winds were sad & the waves were mild,
& the sea sang a story of life,
A lullaby 2 the sailor-child,
A wail 2 the sailor wife”
Celebrating a productive and successful SMH Conference Program Committee Meeting in NOLA with some beignet bites. We had a great group and the experience ended up being a lot of fun. Looking forward to Mobile in March!
Starting my whirlwind 36 hour trip to NOLA off right. There's nothing like conference planning and service work right in the middle of finals.
Today, I talked with the Columbus Scholars (a mentor program for mostly high school students from impoveroshed single parent households) about pirates, history, and tips for how to succeed in college. They were an impressive group!
It's the 160th anniversary of the start of Sherman's March to the Sea. So that makes it the 10th anniversary of my book Through the Heart of Dixie! (@uncpress.bsky.social) uncpress.org/book/9781469... Also if you want to retrace the March, check out shermansmarch.org 🔥🗃️
Welcome @sawh1970.bsky.social to Bluesky and the growing world of #skystorians !
2 years ago, my book ESCAPE TO THE CITY saw the light of the world. If you can, buy it anywhere except through extremely big & disproportionally powerful e-commerce companies. @uncpress.bsky.social @womenknowhistory.bsky.social

That's seriously cool
Good day at sea in the Civil War, November 9, 1863. Writing this gave me some hope. Check it out, support if you can. 🗃️ #MilitaryHistory #NavalHistory

No but I definitely want to learn more
Woke up, hugged my boys, and burst into tears.
#HurricaneHelene shifted enough to the East that we fared better than anticipated. We got some rain and 1 tiny tree knocked over but overall, we are in good shape.
No School today for anyone so I'm just chilling with my boys.
Hoping that everyone in the path stays safe and dry!
