#Forest loss and #degradation is continuing, at an average rate of 25 million hectares a year over the last decade, 63% higher than the rate needed to meet existing targets to reverse forest loss by 2030. Yet climate pledges from Belém COP remain far off track theconversation.com/millions-of-...

#Renewables will grow faster than any major energy source in the next decade, according to the world’s #energy watchdog, making the transition away from #fossil fuels “inevitable”, despite a green backlash in the US and parts of Europe
Atmospheric concentrations of #methane and nitrous oxide – the second and third most important greenhouse gases related to human activities – also rose to record levels in 2024.
The global average concentration of CO2 surged by 3.5 parts per million to 424ppm in 2024, the largest increase since modern measurements started in 1957, according to the report by the World Meteorological Organization.
Levels of #carbon dioxide in the atmosphere soared by a record amount in 2024 UN data shows. Scientists are worried that land and ocean “sinks” that remove #CO2 from the air are weakening as a result of global heating, which could form a vicious circle and drive temperatures up even faster.
The world’s #wind and #solar farms have generated more electricity than coal plants for the first time this year, marking a turning point for the global power system, according to research www.theguardian.com/environment/...
Nope, this is not "fake news"...
The Energy Department has added “climate change,” “green” and “decarbonization” to its growing “list of words to avoid” at its Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy

REVEALED: An in-depth study of 89 multinationals, published in Nature Communications, reveals that companies that purchase #carbon credits do not decarbonize any quicker than those that do not.
Investment in #renewable energy has continued to increase around the world despite moves by Donald Trump’s White House to cancel and derail low-carbon projects.
Only 28 countries have so far submitted #carbon-cutting proposals to the UN, with some of the biggest emitters of greenhouse gases – including China and the EU – still to produce their plans. www.theguardian.com/environment/...

In North Carolina, the State legislature has blocked cities and towns from protecting trees. With no home rule, we have to comply. They reduced dramatically the jurisdiction of Boone NC because we protected the mountain-sides which surround us. Enlightened Republicans killing us all!
A new study has calculated that increasing vegetation in urban areas by 30 per cent could have prevented more than one third of all global heat-related deaths between 2000 to 2019. In total, 1.16 million lives may have been saved with more greenery during this 20-year period. 🌎
Trump proposes unprecedented budget cuts for US science in next fiscal year

NIH cut by 40%

“The science is clear on what needs to change: Stop using fossil fuels, respect and protect nature, use resources sustainably.”
“Our societies were made by us, so human-made problems can be unmade. We limit ourselves when we focus only on preventing the worst, rather than striving for the best.” 🌎🧪
Erasing #climate science, one dumb decision at a time...
"The move will allow the administration to either skip the congressionally mandated report altogether, or pursue an alternative, potentially far more skeptical take on what is otherwise widely accepted climate science." 🌎🧪
"Every 1% of greenhouse gas emitted since 1990 has caused $502 billion in damage from heat alone, excluding costs from hurricanes, droughts and floods." Top-emitters:
Saudi Aramco: $2.05 trillion
Gazprom: $2 trillion
Chevron: $1.98 trillion
ExxonMobil: $1.91 trillion
BP: $1.45 trillion

Clairement inacceptable. @snapquebec.bsky.social
Important and desperately needed!
@theguardian.com is launching a year-long collaborative reporting project that seeks to explore a pivotal but little-known fact about the #climate crisis: the overwhelming majority of the world’s people want their governments to take stronger action. 🌎
This is so wrong. “Unfortunately, all data and services offered under the base contract, including this website, will be unavailable unless and until funding is resumed,” The White House’s Office of Management and Budget has recommended ending funding for the regional climate centers
On root causes, it might be time to go #deepchange mode:
- Rethink waste: From trash to treasure
- Realign with nature: From separation to harmony
- Reconsider responsibility: From me to we
- Reimagine the future: From seconds to centuries
- Redefine value: From economic wealth to planetary health
Efforts to monetize or attempts to reach an audience that is blind to other arguments? We live in a world where some people just can't see beyond $$. If those kinds of arguments can increase chances to protect old-growth, we shouldn't refrain from using them.
Cutting down the last standing giants is not only bad for #biodiversity, #climate and people, it is also economically incoherent. Protecting old-growth #forests in the BC interior could generate more than $43 billion over the next century — far more than #logging the land 🌎

Pierre Poilievre said 15,000 people showed up at his Edmonton rally.
CBC counted 1,558.
Lesson: Inflating crowd numbers is standard political strategy but it only works if you don’t get caught.
