An embroidery with tea and coffee labeled in Chinese.

Last week's assignment was to create a data set from your life, but Celine Heck took it a step further and embroidered it too! This is her caffeinated beverage intake for the week. Chinese was easier than Latin for embroidering the labels, a #MultilingualDH win on top of it all! #DHmakes

What a magnificent day! I gave a lecture about SMU manuscripts, then Bonnie Wheeler took me & a few other colleagues to visit a private collection in Dallas where we saw literally MILLIONS OF DOLLARS of UNBELIEVABLY GORGEOUS manuscripts, then had a dinner party with Voynich cake! My heart is full!

If you use GitHub (especially if you pay for it!!) consider doing this *immediately*

Settings -> Privacy -> Disallow GitHub to train their models on your code.

GitHub opted *everyone* into training. No matter if you pay for the service (like I do). WTH

I've started a "History of NLP" repo to store all of these resources. I don't have time to add everything yet, but I'll keep chipping away, and help is welcome.

Screenshot of a local in-development webpage with a beige background and brown text, titled "Big Type (Big!!)", under a menu showing "Catchword!", "Big Type", and "Mad Libs" options. There is a dashed-bordered large area that says "Drop words here to see what you can build from the BIG TYPE in your type collection", where the word "BIG TYPE" is repeated many times and messily overlapped, in rainbow colors. Below, a bordered area of "Your Big Sorts to pick from" holds photos of various large movable wood type letters, including: A, B, D, D, O, and more.

How does ChatGPT work? Or rather, language models in general- Part 1 attempting a lay explanation. YouTube video by Casey Fiesler

I'm creating a series of short form videos about how language models work technically. The goal is to be something in between "you know it's next token prediction" and "now you've taken a machine learning class." I'd love your thoughts so here are the first few! 🧵

For our Search & Discovery class I'm 👀 for a pithy piece (article or podcast) that comprehensively + critically chronicles the decline of web search — SEO, link rot, AI summaries + ☠️ of click-through, AI slop, etc — but of course, thanks to search's brokenness, I can't find what I'm 👀 for! 😫
