💯. Relatively minor, largely text editing revisions shouldn’t have to go back to the reviewer. And made worse if the reviewer won’t look at it again so they get another reviewer and there’s another whole set of comments…

Happy birthday to Charles Darwin,
patron saint of tired scientists, grumpy fieldworkers, and hating your own manuscript.

I know hamlet taxonomy is tough, but looks to me like at least one is an indigo hamlet?

You need the satisfaction of that final step where you add line numbering and double space it and can sit back and say "NOW it's ready to go"

Another post-doc opportunity at the University of Queensland to work on coral reefs. This time modelling reef ecosystems in the Red Sea in collaboration with Dave Suggett at Kaust. 2.5 years and work rights in Australia. Happy to discuss.

If folks find teaching and mentoring less fun than budgeting, contracts, permits, procurement, travel reimbursement, and departmental bylaws then uni prof is definitely not the right job…

So tough to find people, especially in the summer. Have you asked the authors for more potential names? Sometimes they know people in the field who are hard for the rest of us to find (and have more names beyond their original list)

Think about timing - our grad application deadline is in Dec so I am unlikely to be thinking seriously about new students in the spring semester. Early fall is ideal as I build towards that deadline. And if you apply after the deadline that’s not going to work…

Great to see this paper come out at link.springer.com/article/10.1.... Former lab grad student Lanie Esch did a great job looking at fish in the FL aquarium trade and working out which were the biggest risks as future invasive species based on release probabilities and chances of establishing.

Annual GRFP thread, more relevant than ever (# of awards down 50%).

This thread is for students who didn't win the GRFP today. Who are wondering if they belong in science, or scrolling through posts that start "So excited to announce..." with a little spurt of bitterness they aren’t proud of. 1/9
