Simulated microgravity alters sperm navigation, fertilization and embryo development in mammals Space exploration continues to inspire scientific advancement, with a renewed focus on long-term missions and planetary settlements. NASA’s ARTEMIS program aims to return humans to the Moon by 2029, while SpaceX anticipates its first crewed Mars missions by 20301,2,3,4. As humanity moves toward permanent off-Earth habitation, understanding how extraterrestrial conditions affect reproduction is essential for crew health and the sustainability of life beyond Earth. Extraterrestrial environments are characterized by altered gravity, increased radiation, and extreme climates. Earth’s gravity is 1×g, compared with 0.377×g on Mars, 0.166×g on the Moon, and near-zero in the vacuum of space5, with these reduced gravity conditions known as microgravity. Gravity has played a fundamental role in the evolution of life, with cells relying on mechanosensing to convert physical forces into biochemical signals6. Studies of astronauts returning from the international space station (ISS) have shown impacts of a reduced gravity environment on several key physiological systems, including a fluid shift to reduce circulating blood volume, increased muscular atrophy and a 1-2% bone loss every month, increasing ataxia, postural disturbances and fatigue and a reduction in the differentiation and polarisation of immune cells7,8,9,10. Reproductive function is similarly gravity sensitive. Microgravity has been shown to impair mouse embryonic...

An extreme close-up focuses on the face and paws of a small, furry mammal with thick grey and tan fur. The animal has a large, dark, reflective eye and long, thin whiskers, with its delicate paws held up to its mouth as if it is eating. The shallow depth of field captures the fine texture of the fur and a subtle reflection of the surrounding trees within its eye.

#Mammal #Rodent #SquirrelSaturday This Red Squirrel was inspecting my 'drying rack' in the corner of my carport. Little so-and-so keeps finding ways to launch itself onto the bird feeders. Last week I caught it 'flying' off of my roof, to land on a suet holder. The battle wages on.

Phone would not use a flash. I don’t know why.

This was much larger than rats I’ve seen before but had a tail like a rat. I propose this is a muskrat (Ondatra zibethicus).
The only real issue is: wtf was it doing in my front yard at 10pm?
Context: this is within 100 feet approximately of a large freshwater lake.

Limitations of serial cloning in mammals We began serial cloning experiments (Fig. 1a) in January 2005. The success rate of re-cloned mice gradually increased as generations progressed (up to 15.5% in the 26th-generation), and NGS analysis showed no difference between first-generation clones and 25th-generation re-clones. Therefore, we initially believed that serial cloning could probably continue indefinitely28, and thus continued this experiment. To maintain consistent experimental conditions as much as possible, TW and SW always participated in the production of next generation re-cloned mice. Approximately 3-4 generations of re-cloned mice were produced each year. However, the cloning success rate gradually decreased with each successive generation (Fig. 1b). Although success rates varied between generations, the average success rate declined to 0.6% after 57 rounds of serial cloning, and all 58th-generation re-cloned mice died the next day. In total, more than 1200 cloned mice were produced from a single original donor mouse (Supplementary Table 1). The original donor mouse was female with an agouti coat color; therefore, all cloned mice were female and exhibited the same coat color as the donor. Whole-genome sequencing (WGS) analysis also confirmed that these clones originated from the donor mouse (see later). Placenta and lifespan of re-cloned mice All cloned mice have been found...

Argentina updates national IUCN mammal list with new focus on non-native species Scientists have updated the conservation status of hundreds of mammals in Argentina, adding previously unassessed species and revising biodiversity threat levels. The assessment evaluated 417 native mammal species across the country, identifying national threats even in species that are listed as least concern. More than 500 scientists contributed to the effort, which also involved a new way of measuring the impact of non-native mammals. “Some species are more at risk of disappearing than others, either because they’re more exposed or because their biology and ecology make them more affected by certain [factors],” Javier Pereira, general coordinator of the 2025 Categorization of the Mammals of Argentina, told Mongabay. “We need to measure that in order to have an indication of which species are more at risk than others.” The Argentine Society for the Study of Mammals (SAREM), a national collective of scientists, conducts periodic assessments of the conservation status of mammal species in Argentina. Its goal is to better understand population trends and threats across the country’s many ecosystems. Species expert teams review available scientific literature, monitoring data and field observations from the previous five years and then assign conservation statuses, which are then reviewed and formally validated by a committee...
