David Attenborough takes on PHEASANTS!
“Native to Asia, but now released into our countryside on an industrial scale, over 30 million every year… eating vast numbers of insects, reptiles and amphibians every day.”
Time for the Government to regulate this out-of-control industry

Sadly it wasn't the Black Lark 😅
Pleased to contribute one find to this list 🤘
Common Crane enjoyed a record breeding season in the UK in 2025, with 87 pairs raising 37 chicks and bringing the total population to some 250 individuals:

A female Hooded Merganser, a dark brown diving duck with funky crest, swimming on a lake with a fringe of grasses and sedges.
On my 5th attempt, managed to finally see a Hooded Merganser in the UK, a female at Alvecote Pools, Warwickshire. 🥳

A Goldcrest perched facing front on on a small branch. It has tilted its head forwards showing off its yellow crown stripe flanked with two black crown stripes.
Can't remember the last time a Goldcrest perched nicely for the camera. I'll take it! #UKBirding #SuffolkBirding

It's not easy!
Sat at my desk at #RSPBLakenheathFen and can hear Curlews bubbling, Peacock butterflies floating past the window, Long-tailed Tits are nest-building and Marsh Tits are singing. Love Spring!
In 2024, nearly half of the world’s migratory species were in decline. Just two years later, new data shows the crisis is accelerating.
An interim report from @cms.int reveals that 49% of CMS-listed species are now imperiled.

“Development poses a severe threat to biodiversity [&] regulations are insufficient & poorly enforced
As one of the most nature-depleted nations globally, we need a huge amount more spent on conservation & the profits reported by many developers suggest they could spare some change to help”

A Fieldfare stands facing the camera on a short ward grassland.
Hundreds of Fieldfares in a roving flock this afternoon at my brecks site. A nice hurrah before they leave for Scandinavia #UKBirding #SuffolkBirding

I've taken action for our wild places!
The UK Government is proposing changes to the National Planning Policy Framework. Help it work for nature.

A close up of a Whiskered Treeswifts facing left. It has brown underparts, blue wings, a deep blue hood, white 'whiskers' above and below the eye which project behind the head.
Whilst some birds were incredibly hard to see at Danum, on the other hand the Whiskered Treeswifts were a delight.

Utterly damning report from Office for Environmental Protection - the Govt’s not only missing its targets to protect wildlife in England, it’s also failing on *almost all* environmental measures - and in some cases actively destroying the natural world through its obsession with growth at all costs
A bird perched on a vine with green back, red bum and a black face mask. The distinguishing features from other similar pittas include chestnut crown stripe and narrow supercillium.
We found a rare bird (only 4 previous ebird records in Sabah) in the form of a Fairy Pitta at Danum! Worth slogging the leech-infested trails in the dark 🎉

A view of the Danum Valley rainforest in lowland Sabah with a river in the foreground. Trees reaching 100m tall grow here.
Finished up 5 days in the Danum Valley. Some of the toughest but most rewarding birding I've known. Giant Pitta and Bornean Ground-cuckoo both seen (!) but far too elusive for photos
