🪶 In the Ojibwe language, the word for chickadee is gijigijigaaneshiinh. To hear it pronounced (it sounds really cool) visit ojibwe.lib.umn.edu/m...

A snippet from an article by the IUCN detailing the updated Red List. It reads:

This IUCN Red List update includes reassessments of 1,360 bird species and completes the eighth comprehensive assessment of all bird species worldwide by BirdLife International. Involving thousands of experts over nine years, 1,256 (11.5%) of the 11,185 species assessed are globally threatened. Overall, 61% of bird species have declining populations – an estimate that has increased from 44% in 2016.

The most prevalent cause of bird population declines is habitat loss and degradation, driven especially by agricultural expansion and intensification and logging – the foremost threats to birds at risk of extinction.

Difficult to read but important. For those unaware, the IUCN Red List was updated, and 61% of birds species are noted to now be in decline. Habitat loss and degradation are the most prevalent cause.

Oh I also became a cat mom this past year. Milo was a kitten we took from a litter that was living under our porch! He’s nice and spoiled now :)

Anyone here good with hydrangeas? I’m unsure if mine got hit with a fungus or something… we did have bark beetles unfortunately this summer.

I checked some stems and they are alive! I just don’t know whats wrong and what to do for next spring :( Location is northern VA!

Well, it's official. After our paper last year (onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10....), the Slender-billed Curlew is officially declared Extinct today.

Scientists dream of describing new species, not writing their obituary and epitaph, knowing that they are gone forever #ornithology

My abuela passed away three weeks ago. And the last few hummingbirds I saw were all female RTHU. I can’t help but think of them both now, hearing my abuela sing about el zunzun and my abuelo telling me stories of them.

Te quiero mucho Abuela y Abuelo. Te extraño mucho 🤍

Back on the bird site, I used to talk about how much hummingbirds mean to me. My abuelos both loved them and always talked about el zunzuncito (the Bee Hummingbird) to me. When my abuelo passed away, I couldn’t help but see him in every hummingbird I saw.

Video

One of my fav things I got this year was a hummingbird feeder bird buddy! Unfortunately, the humbums have left my area for warmer climates but here’s a video of a lovely male RTHU who came to visit a bit ago :)

JK Rowling pledges to keep up fight against SNP trans policies

It cannot be made clearer.

If you continue to support the Harry Potter franchise in any way, you are directly funding the removal of trans people's human rights in the UK.

A small hummingbird with deep magenta and violet plumage is perched on a branch, fluffing its feathers. Its head is turned to the side, showing a bright white forehead and a long, slender bill, set against a soft green background.

Oh man! Hi everyone, it’s been a while!

A lot has happened over the last year and I needed to step away for a bit. I wasn’t feeling inspired and truthfully, I went through some really difficult times.

But I am back! And hopefully with more birds :)

Here’s an American Redstart for tax!

Hi all! If we were mutuals on twitter and I haven’t followed you back, it’s because I’m god awful at remembering. I really stopped using that twitter after a while anyways.

Hoping to post more about my work here! Will try my best!

Stay strong and resilient!

Three coyotes nuzzling. The ground is covered in snow. These "charismatic social canine" photos are usually of wolves. I think coyotes deserve equal respect and more visual materials—photos, videos—that bring the public into their hidden lives. Unobtrusively, of course.

Contrary to popular belief, 'yotes are social creatures. They're "fission-fusion" animals capable of operating alone and also within a family pack.

Wolves are more socially compulsive. Lone wolves face a greater risk of starvation and opportunistic attacks by other wolves. Unlike coyotes, they aren't built to survive on their own for extended periods of time. They're big, bounding, energetic forest doggos with high metabolisms.* They prefer large prey that can only be captured by team effort.

* Wolves don't strictly live in forests. They're adaptable animals who can survive in a wide range of habitats, like coyotes.

Wolves are hot on everyone's tongues. Screw it, I'm yoteposting.

Check the ALT. That's where all the text is. This is fairly basic stuff. Later on, I'll try to share lesser-known information about coyotes.

Like I am legitimately concerned of failing. My experience has not been great in terms of my mental health, but I know I have one committee member in my corner. I don’t anticipate it being easy. And I hope it’s just revisions and I pass. IDK so nervous.
