New projections of British biodiversity under plausible climate & land-use futures
Severe futures have 12-20% birds, butterflies, plants going extinct & major changes to ecosystems
More sustainable scenarios only decrease & do not stop loss; but require urgent action

My second publication from my PhD looking at using a molecular diagnostic method (which I developed for my first paper found here: doi.org/10.1111/afe....) to look for the main parasitoid of the oak processionary, an invasive pest of oak trees, to help inform conservation biocontrol strategies!
NEW PAPER: Application of a novel molecular diagnostic method to examine the spatio‐temporal trends of Carcelia iliaca, a larval parasitoid of oak processionary moth (Thaumetopoea processionea)@respublications.bsky.social - led by Kyle Miller resjournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...
Check out this perspective’s paper as we move ecoacoustics into network ecology
Done!
Yes I’ll ask our PO to do this (sorry for the miss).
Abstract deadline end of tomorrow (1st Feb 2026)! Lots of interesting talks and poster proposals have been submitted so far...
Such nice work - well done
It looks like light pollution mitigation needs to be more nuanced and adaptive. Great to point to our #SAFELUX project here too

A map of the US with each 2025 billion-plus dollar weather and climate disaster geo-located on it. Source: Climate Central
After the US admin cancelled the $B Climate + Weather Disaster dataset, @climatecentral.org hired the scientists who ran it and set it back up.
Now the 2025 numbers are in: it's 3rd highest year on record and highest year w/o land-falling hurricanes.

A screenshot of the abstract, reading: "Around the world, there has been a turn towards governments that are sceptical of the importance of academic freedom, distrustful of scientific knowledge that does not support their policy agenda and dismissive of international fora for science-based policymaking. Here we discuss what this global autocra-tization means for sustainability science and policymaking, presenting global data but discussing trends in the European Union (EU) and the USA as case studies. We argue that those of us who are sustainability scientists and environmental policymakers face a clear choice: keep our heads down and hope to weather these rough political waters or react to the political tide by actively supporting academic freedom and dialogue on sustainability."
Thoughtful piece by my @science.nature.org colleague Rob et al. discussing the implications of global autocratization for science.
We face a clear choice, they say: keep our heads down and hope to weather rough political waters...or choose to actively support academic freedom + sustainability.

Three black calves lying on a wooden platform inside a metal pen, two with white forehead markings.
Feeling the January blues? These triplet calves born at Nafferton Farm are here to brighten your day! 🐄🐄🐄 With odds of 1 in 105,000, this rare trio is a reminder that amazing things can happen! #WeAreNCL
*This* is leadership. And @davidobura.bsky.social is so obviously right: turning your back on facts doesn't make them go away
We’ve been working on OPM and other invasive insects for years. It’s great to be able to create practical molecular tools to help monitor and manage these species, especially in the context of natural pest control.

Very proud of this new paper from the lab! Work by the magnificent Andrea Adden and many brilliant collaborators illuminate how moth and butterfly brains have evolved in light of different ecologies. Freely available here: rdcu.be/eVR3B; @lundvision.bsky.social @biologylu.bsky.social
🎓 Congratulations to all our amazing students graduating today! Your hard work, dedication, and resilience have paid off. We’re so proud of you and we may just see you again for a Postgrad! 🌟 #NCLgrad #graduation2025
Butterfly populations across the U.S. are in alarming decline, a Science study finds, with total abundance falling by 22% in just 20 years.
Such widespread losses emphasize the urgent need for conservation action. https://scim.ag/4ombGv3 #WildlifeConservationDay
For me, 2025 has felt like a particularly heavy year ... and you might feel the same. So as we head into the holiday season, I wanted to share a few recommendations — books, podcasts, and newsletters — that encourage me, make me think, and remind me how hope begins with action.
#SpudFest25 was a S-MASH! 🥔queues formed early as attendees stocked up on SNES-grown spuds. Huge thanks to our Uni catering team for the tasty potato creations and our local business & research stalls. Got spud pics? Share them with snes.engage@newcastle.ac.uk! #WeAreNCL
It’s Secret Santa time @sciencesncl.bsky.social thanks to Mukilan Suresh for organising! 🎄🎅
