Watercolour illustration of a curlew in side profile, standing next to a body of water in front of a part-grassy, part-sandy landscape. It has a down-curved bill, brown and grey plumage, and long legs. The handwritten caption above reads: 'Scolopas acquata The Curlew - Jan 18[16?]'.
Good morning to everyone, but especially to all the curlews, for today is their special day!
This early 19th century watercolour illustration of a curlew by an unknown artist comes from our 'Bird Book'.

I'm making one last push to let people know about this online talk -- sponsored by the British Library in conjunction with their current exhibition on fairy tales. The live stream starts at 7:30 tonight, but if you buy a ticket *before* the event you can watch it any time over the next 7 days.
#OTD: German astronomer Caroline Herschel (www.infinite-women.com/women/caroli...) is often credited as the 1st woman to discover a comet, 1 August 1786, but Maria Margaretha Kirch (www.infinite-women.com/women/maria-...) beat her by decades, having discovered the "Comet of 1702" on 21 April 1702.

Indeed it is. We had a fine amnesty and stopped charging altogether a few years ago, we would rather people use the library and not have to worry about late charges.

Excellent work!
Seems a common misconception, it surprised us too. Although, in our defence, we hadn't seen our copy for 50 years...
They may be right. I once found a pristine copy of a leather-bound, nineteenth century book in the library that had NEVER been checked out, not once, ever, since its acquisition. Libraries remain the hosts of the most durable archives in existence. Bless 'em (& keep funding 'em!!!).
You can't smell it through your screen though!

The gentleman confirmed he had borrowed it while still at school. The book bears the stamp of our Schools Department so this seems reasonable.

We're always happy to see our books find their way back, it's not long since we had one turn up after 70 years!
We are still working it out 😂

Statue of a man leaning and looking towards the sea, standing on a high pole. In the pavement around the sculpture the cardinal points of the compass are indicated, as well as a sign to "VIK ICELAND 1534 KM."
This picture reminded us of a statue we have here in Hull, there is a replica in Vik. 🙂

A picture of a rather dilapidated copy of "The picture of Dorian Gray" There is visible water damage to the cover and the plastic cover is yellowing. Obviously, not evident from the picture but there is a truly foul musty smell emanating from it!
Last week, a gentleman returned this rather dilapidated copy of this famous book to us after 50 years. He had found it in his attic!
Presumably this means there is a pristine copy somewhere in our libraries....
