I saw this earlier. It's not news to most of us I'm sure but it never hurts to reinforce the fact that our "usual" world view is very wrong! I don't know the source so apologies for reusing without credit
Surely if the demand for photo tourism was as high as campaigns like Campaign to Ban Trophy Hunting claim then spend at NP's like Kafue would have significantly higher.
Will increased competition caused by hunting bans reduce Kafue's share of the tourism spending pot?

But despite all that potential Kafue NP only draws annual visitor numbers that are less than 21% of the daily visitors to the Cheltenham Festival and funded on just 18% of the daily spend at the festival.

Kafue holds the potential to be transformed into a globally significant wildlife sanctuary for key species like elephants, wild dog, cheetah and lions, and already hosts 21 antelope species, the highest diversity found anywhere on the continent.
7/9
Kafue’s diverse wildlife consists of 158 mammal species, 515 bird species, 70 reptile species, 58 species of fish and 36 amphibious species.

Average spend at Cheltenham was £584 in 2015 rising to £697 in 2022.

These figures give us a maximum annual income at Kafue NP of £6.26m in 2015.
Compared with a daily income at Cheltenham using the 2015 average spend figure of £35.04m
5/9
Average spend in Kafue is difficult to find but there is a scale of total spend in 2015 on page 144 in the link on the second tweet of this thread.
That total spend works out at an individual spend between £109 and £499 per visitor.

By comparison this week there's an estimate of 60,000 people visiting the Cheltenham festival every day, this figure doesn't appear to have changed much over the last few festivals & is the lowest available figure.

Kafue NP saw a total of 12550 visits by individuals in 2015, according to the latest publicly available figures.

When considering #trophyhunting bans should we not consider the viability of the alternatives before we impose an import ban?
