#Genealogy Bluesky, some heraldry help!

I have a coat of arms for the Quéraud name, but I’m not sure it’s accurate (I’ve only ever seen it on an estate’s keystone) and believe it may be associated with just five sisters.

Any info (or point me to a source) would be appreciated!

Little call-out for help to historians of France!

I'd like to consult some documents at the Bibliothèque de l'Institut de France, but I need some recommendations from existing members – are there any out there who wouldn't mind? 🙏 🇫🇷 🗃️

Oh! At that time they are in Poitou: Les Herbiers, Coëx, Noirmoutier, etc.

I see from your bio that you are the perfect person for this job :)

Thank you!

Yes, it’s a difficult name. We’ve seen it even as Queyraud and Kaireau. But I think it began as Queraud in the 13th c.

(Your English is much better than my French - I am embarrassed to even try!)

Wonderful! There should be information on the Queraud family from around the 14th century. Could I contact you by email?

Just tossing this out into the universe: Does anyone have access to a copy of “De châteaux en logis; itinéraires des familles de la Vendée: Les archives de Guy de Raigniac”?

I need reference info on my French Huguenot ancestors and it’s not available digitally.

Yes. We’ve tried and failed for a couple of generations now. We have a couple of theories about his name being an alias, but Josué Quereau’s roots seem doomed to remain a mystery. 🤷‍♀️

(I’m sorry I’m just seeing this now)

Yes, although my family’s history often repeats that we’re from Bretagne, I’ve found Queraud/Quereau to be centered around Charente-Maritime.

I think, perhaps, something may have been lost in translation and they went through *Britain* as so many Huguenots did.

My goodness. What do these priests think they’re doing, hoarding the registers until they turn to dust. 😭

Handwritten record from Green-Wood Cemetery

Handwritten record from Green-Wood Cemetery

You really never know what you’ll find when new genealogy records are digitized. I found five family members who had originally been buried in Wallabout Cemetery in Brooklyn, then moved as a group years later, to be permanently interred at Green-Wood. 🌳

You’d be amazed at how much you can pick up.

I’ve been researching my French Huguenot family for a year now, and have gone from zero to being able to easily navigate and translate 17th century French church registers. You’ll see the same words come up over and over, and then progress from there.

I received a great-grandmother’s death cert last year.

She died at a ripe old age, far from where she was born in AL, with grandsons making their best guesses, which is probably why her grandfather’s name was listed as her father’s name.

Sometimes these certs are only as accurate as the reporter.

I’ve always said that if I’d been on the Oregon Trail I’d have died of dysentery five minutes after leaving Missouri.

Any French speakers here? I could use some genealogy help on an alternative spelling (ie does Queraud sound like Coyaud to French ears?)

State archives might have military info like that, especially since it’s pre-Civil War. Depending upon the state, some state archivists are extremely helpful and have info like that at their fingertips.

Wondering if anyone here in the genealogy 🧬 or history community has any insight into what this Rhode Island colonial army (1740) board payment may have been for.

It seems to be something beyond their usual pay. Were these soldiers given paid leave?

I bought my mom a subscription to one of those services that sends you a life story prompt each week, then prints it all up in book form at the end of the year. She’s having a blast, and I know this is something my kids will love reading.

Just a little shoutout to *both* the Rhode Island Historical Society and the RI Department of State’s reference desk.

I sent a request for information (regarding a colonial soldier) early last week and received an answer — including scans and explanations — THE NEXT DAY.

Highly recommend! 🧐🧬
