Something I’m pondering… how often does math curricula/instruction encourage a habit of looking for patterns? Not just an MP, but a routine, from early math thru forever. #ITeachMath

For my book that is out soon, I asked my doc student Avery McNiff to draw comics based on research photos in classrooms with kids and teachers, so that we could show expression and action, but keep identities private. I absolutely love them. I am working on my website and just enjoying her work!

Resharing because I listened to this episode today. SUCH a great conversation—fluency and problem solving are “symbiotic”

Definitely Cinci specific. I do like the mound of cheese.

Skills before application? As in students need to know procedure before they can apply it.

“…simple labels help orient us in the world, they don’t hold up well against the complexity of the world….As long as you tell your self-story in these black and white terms, you will find no peace.”

I also think about this in relationship to my identity as an “educator” now. I do not call myself a teacher anymore, but I’m still involved with math education.

I find this and replies so far interesting to think about. When in the classroom, I referred to myself and students as mathematicians. But I had the opportunity to hear Deborah Peart speak at state math conference and she said she prefers “mathers” like readers and writers.

So grateful for #IowaMath giving us the opportunity to learn from @themathguru.bsky.social about Math identity in (and outside) the classroom

I think these arguments can be useful to addressing the "science of math" discourse.

"What we mean by literacy might be the most glaring hole in how we discuss reading. We have different definitions of reading, but generally, reading is the ability to decode text and make meaning of the text. Reading, however, is not the same as literacy." - JLV
