I'm pleased to discover just now that both of our proposals for #NCTMDEN26 got accepted! Thanks to Dr. Kristopher J. Childs and the rest of the @nctm.org program committee for their hard work! Hope to see you in Denver in October. #MTBoS #ITeachMath

I love teaching #mathCircle! We are underway the first week at Stanford with the spring quarter and I just published a compiliation (534 pages, 288 without student exemplars!!) of our work from last quarter on the integer partition problem - such a #mathisfun and rich topic! #mtbos #iteachmath

Math Game Monday: Sim This game challenges students to plan ahead and think strategically. Many parents remember struggling to learn math. We hope to provide a better experience for our children. And one of the best ways for children to enjoy learning is through hands-on play. So what are you waiting for? Let's play some math! Sim Math Concepts: geometry, strategy. Players: only two.

Plot of FEV for Smokers and Non-Smokers.
Smokers appear to have a higher FEV which can be (erroneously) inferred as having "healthier" lungs.

We recently looked at the very user-friendly Forced Expiratory Volume (FEV) data set as an exercise in data slicing and visualization:

colab.research.google.com/drive/1u7qb6...

Got an excited message from a student: "We think we can show that smoking is good for your lungs!"

"If you don't know how to explain a math concept using barely any words, then you probably also don't know which words to use to explain it verbally."

#MTBoS, is this true?

I have been leaning toward believing this is (mostly) true.

You don’t have to have all the answers to lead powerful math discussions.
Inviting students into the thinking builds confidence, ownership, and deeper understanding.

I offer infinite retakes on my quizzes, which are one-question quizzes focused on a specific skill. But creating another version of a 15-question math test? I can’t create and grade infinite versions of that. Teachers don’t get enough time to do that. #MTBoS #ITeachMath

Unfortunately, this article fails to address a major roadblock to test retakes: creating another test often takes a lot of time, especially for math, unless the problems are all routine (which they shouldn’t be). I can’t easily make up another authentic word problem from scratch. #MTBoS #ITeachMath

I am still thinking hard about the ramifications of not only saying the denominator first, but also writing it first. In Korean, one names a fraction with the denominator, then the numerator.
Surely that affects understanding?!

Thinking Thursday: Perimeter Puzzle 1 Writing to Learn Math: At its heart, geometry is all about seeing connections and relationships. Do you want your children to develop the ability to reason creatively and figure out things on their own? Another student sent an update on modeling the atmospheric CO_2 data, and was able to get the model:

a sin(b(x +c)) + d + ex +f x^2

to fit quite nicely.

We actually do math in our math PD, and the same is true for most of our podcast episodes. That shouldn't be weird.

FAQ: Remembering What We Learn “When we do our daily lessons, my son does great. Everything seems to click. But when he sees the same topic later, in a review or on a test, it’s like he’s never heard of it before. How can I help him pull math up from the dregs of lost memory?” This is a common problem, and there’s no easy answer.

FAQ: Remembering What We Learn

It’s easy for humans to convince ourselves we understand something when someone else explains it. It seems to make sense, but it doesn't stick in our minds.

So how can we help our kids when they can’t remember what to do?
