Nice story - I got my copy and read it today, and also took some pictures of our local nest - it's not in a conifer.

A nuthatch sideways and looking infront of her feet on oak bark. The bird has a black stripe through its eye and on it's forhead with whigte between and a very sharp beak about half the length of it's head. The feet are splayed in a V from the body. Black and white- high contrast image.

oh my! I can't wait to look around my area and see if I can find evidence of this (with binoculars of course).

I love these little non-orientable birds that have no sense of gravity.
