I would suggest linseed or tung oil if you want to be fancy. I usually use coconut oil, it doesn't go rancid fast like other kitchen oils. However this time it was canola. Considering how frequently tools get washed - it should be a problem

Not sure what you mean by seemingly "bad", is it the opinion of the artist or the audience?

If we separate bad and good as qualifiers from the "eye of the beholder". To the artist, I would think, it's all a process, the art that might have been seen as "bad" could be a crucial step for creating "good"
