A Poem For The Magpies By Oliver Kleyer We buried Daddy with- out his wedding ring. Being active until his final day, he somehow misplaced it, searching for it some time, cursed and went back to the more important things in life, like gardening. ”The best basis for a good garden“ he always maintained „is a good compost heap.“ Now that he himself is decomposing, I remembered his words and went to work on his beloved heap. Unnoticed by the magpies, I found gold, sparkling in the rotting soil. Daddy’s wedding ring. His way of telling me: „I love you, my son“.
At the moment, there are many things going on that belong on the #compost heap of history. But I don't want to get political. So instead, here's my "Poem for the magpies", published in Viridian Door, Issue 4 in 2024.

Just tidying the garden before daylight saving ends. The lawns are short with farm grade ryegrass just starting to seed.
Is it safe compost? There are 3-4 loads mixed with green grass and green hedge mulch. I have extra hedge mulch, cauli greens & dahlias.

You can see a huge knot of happy compost worms, Eisenia fetida, and some worm castings around them. The worms are reddish, the castings are brown, and there are some whitish seeds. They are inside half a pumpkin, and they have consumed the flesh of the pumpkin and left the shell.
The scooped out worms, castings, a few worm egg casings, and pumpkin seeds. The worms are reddish, the seeds are whitish, the castings are brown. The egg casings look like tiny yellow-brown lemons.
This is something which brings me joy. I harvested composting worms from my indoor bins to add to my huge outdoor leaf mold bins. A few weeks ago, I put ½ an old pumpkin in each indoor bin. They love that, so it was super easy to scoop them up. They will do excellent things to the leaves. #compost
