Cydia strobilella emerged from cones of Norway spruce I collected nine days ago, just north of Masham. The first record for VC65 and the sixth for Yorkshire. Probaby under-recorded.

Nice record Ian

Earliest by almost two weeks. Lots of "earliest evers" this year so far.

Earliest ever by 15 days. And I think that was yours from 2024 - 13th March! Lots of "earliest evers!" this year already.

It seems to be spreading rather slowly. Certainly none on the holm oaks in my part of the county yet. I keep looking!

Some opportunistic leafminering on a family day out produced plenty of species, including Bucculatrix albedinella (elm), Coleophora albitarsella (ground-ivy), Stigmella catharticella (purging buckthorn) and Ectoedemia intimella (sallow). #TeamMoth #YorkshireMoths @doublekidney.bsky.social

Diurnea lipsiella in the garden trap this morning is the first record for VC65. I have now had more species in the garden this year than in any previous year, having just pipped the record total in 2022.

The Coleophora sp. larval cases I found on sea purselane by the Humber Estuary last October turned out to be C. salinella! Only recorded in Yorkshire for the first time in August last year (I suspect it's been there a while though). #TeamMoth #YorkshireMoths @doublekidney.bsky.social

A great day leafminering with @doublekidney.bsky.social and Ian Marshall, with 81 species recorded. Stigmella tiliae (first VC 61 record; only taken about 10 years!), Coleophora lusciniaepennella, C. anatipennella, C. gryphipennella and C. potentillae were highlights. #TeamMoth #YorkshireMoths

A well deserved find by Samantha Batty who diligently searched amongst the grassland sorrel plants. Just two leaves found with mines of Enteuch acetosae present.

If you look closely you can pick out the spiral galleries of the tiny moth Enteucha acetosae.

It's still an interesting time for moth trapping in the #LDV with two new species recorded this week – Scarce Bordered Straw and Four-spotted Footman (both migrants and new for the reserve). Also nice to see Merveille du Jour with five trapped over recent days 🦋

Euchromius ocellea (Silver-spotted Veneer) from Flamborough Head, East Yorkshire VC61 yesterday. A smart looking micro and a rare migrant moth in Yorkshire. New to Flamborough.

Plenty of #leafmines on a black poplar at work today, with the three main species that occur in Yorkshire (Phyllocnistis unipunctella, Stigmella trimaculella, Gypsonoma oppressana) very easy to find, including all three on one leaf (last photo). #TeamMoth #YorkshireMoths @doublekidney.bsky.social

Moth numbers and variety way down last night. But any day with one of these is a good day. My fifth in the last three weeks in the garden, Driffield, East Yorkshire VC61. #teammoth @doublekidney.bsky.social

Now that's how I like to see my eggboxes. Clifden Nonpareil was a new moth for me and a first for Wharfedale (there were two). Barred Chestnut on the same eggbox (centre bottom) was also new for me. 570 moths of 49 species #teammoth #VC64 #Otley

The good run of migrant moths (for my East Yorkshire/VC 61 garden) continues, the highlight being a male Four-spotted Footman! Also a second Nephopterix angustella, Rusty-dot Pearl, Humming-bird Hawk-moth, etc. #teammoth #YorkshireMoths @migrantmothuk.bsky.social @doublekidney.bsky.social

Huge surprise in the #LDV moth trap this morning in the form of a Clifden Nonpareil 🤩– a first for the reserve after years of waiting! Nice to be able to share it with our visiting corporate team of staff from Drax Group and several local birders and moth enthusiasts 😄

Isophrictis striatella in the garden trap this morning is new for for VC65. We just need it in VC64 now, then it will be in all Yorkshire VCs. No tansy or sneezewort nearby so I don't know where it has come from.

For all those who send me specimens for dissection, I am not accepting any more for the next two months. I've had to pay postage-due charges several times this year, and the latest has cost me a fiver - no stamp on at all. If it continues, I will levy a charge. A fiver a moth sounds reasonable.

Comparison Langmaid’s vs Lesser

Getting a few Langmaid’s Yellow Underwing records sent in… must have photos of the underside of forewing and topside of hindwing to confirm… see excellent comparison by Neil Bowman. #norfolkmoths
