An all-in-one pipeline for the in vitro discovery and in vivo testing of Plasmodium falciparum malaria transmission blocking drugs - Nature Communications Current antimalarials often fail to target mature stage V gametocytes. To aid antimalarial drug discovery, the authors present a preclinical malaria transmission-blocking drug research platform, using engineered parasites, that facilitates the screening for gametocytocidal compounds in vitro and the evaluation of transmission-blocking drug activity in vivo.

New pipeline to identify malaria transmission-blocking drugs The Biomolecular Screening Facility has contributed to a successful collaborative study led by Till Voss (Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute, University of Basel), resulting in the development of a robust, all in one pipeline for the discovery and testing of transmission blocking drugs against Plasmodium falciparum. This multidisciplinary effort combines a high-throughput in vitro assay with a novel in vivo model, enabling systematic evaluation of compounds that target mature stage V gametocytes - the only forms of the parasite that infect mosquitoes.

It combines a high-throughput in vitro assay & a mouse model, enabling evaluation of compounds targeting the parasite's mosquito-infecting forms

The findings highlight the health impact of heat and the urgent need for protective measures.
Swiss TPH monitors heat-related mortality in Switzerland on behalf of the Federal Office of Public Health @bag.admin.ch and the Federal Office for the Environment @bafu.admin.ch.

Rising temperatures & more frequent heatwaves are a clear signal of #ClimateChange – and pose a risk to public health.

New figures of the heat-related mortality monitoring show:
- In summer 2024, ~326 deaths were attributed to heat – less than in 2022 & 2023
- Summer 2024 was the 6th warmest in 🇨🇭
